There's nothing I love more than a classic French-tip manicure. This widely popular nail-art trend has had a revival over the past few years thanks to the quiet-luxury aesthetic, and I tend to wear it all year round, as the chic, minimal finish complements everything in my wardrobe. That being said, with spring right around the corner, I'm in the mood to switch things up and inject some colour into my nails. As a lover of all things neutral, I always get a bit scared of block colours in case I end up not liking the shade that I've chosen, so when I saw that pastel French-tip nails were a thing, I practically ran to my nearest nail salon.
As you'll see below, pastel French tips are the perfect way to add a subtle pop of colour to your nails without fully committing to a shade. If you can't make up your mind about what colour to go for, you can even opt for a different pastel hue on each nail for a fun twist on the trend. Instead of opting for a stark contrast between a soft pink base layer and bright white tips, manicurists have been creating altogether softer, sheerer iterations with just a hint of a pale tip–often provided by the natural nail length itself.
Don't worry: The modern French manicure of 2023 veers decidedly on the former side for the perfect elevated neutral, favoring just a thinly brushed white tip over a nude-pink base, often over shorter or natural nails filed in a soft oval or squoval shape.
Ami suggests a rounded or square-oval shape for short nails and an almond shape for longer nails. Ami says to try and choose a base shade suitable for your skin tone, but if in doubt, simply opt for a clear polish.
However, there's one nail look that will always be popular and that's the humble French tip. Already named as one of the nail styles set to dominate this spring, the timeless French manicure transcends trend cycles and remains one of the most-requested looks in salons year-on-year. Why?
If you loved the “blueberry milk” nails that dominated last spring, powder blue nails are set to take over this year. “Soft pastels are dopamine enhancing,” says Gerstein, noting that pastel blue, in particular, is universally flattering across skin tones.
Whereas a traditional French or American manicure calls for a super-sheer nude base color, the milky French manicure uses a semi-opaque white or off-white shade for a little more coverage.

“Many people are now embracing a sleek, minimalistic look for their nails, and we're seeing a lot of sheers and pigmented skin tone and nude shades trending for 2024.” This should come as no surprise, especially after a year filled with bright pink Barbie-inspired nail designs. The Vanilla French manicure retains the same DNA as the traditional French manicure with a neutral base and lighter tip, but more closely resembles the "American" French manicure, which is slightly softer than the original and uses an off-white shade at the tip instead of a stark white.
