Why You Should Use a Pre-Wax Treatment | Pre Wax Tips (1)

Whether you’ve decided to try
waxing for the first time, or you are a waxing pro, you’ll be looking forward to silky smooth skin and long-lasting results. You just can’t beat that gloriously smooth skin you get after a wax!

Preparing your body with a pre-wax treatment is the best way to ensure a more comfortable treatment and hair-free skin. But what is a pre-wax treatment and what does it involve? Our mobile therapists are here to share their top pre-waxing tips to make your treatment go smoothly and achieve flawless beach-ready results.

Use a pre-wax cleanser

Maintaining a pre-wax skincare routine will help to ensure your waxing session is a success. Using a pre-wax cleanser will help to remove any surface oils, make-up, bacteria, pollution, and perspiration from the area.A cleaner surface leads to the best results.

Look for a pre-wax cleanser that also rebalances the PH levels of your skin, as this will help to tighten the pores and hair follicles to maximise your waxing treatment. Clean skin will allow the wax to adhere tightly, release the hair effectively, and help to prevent post-waxing breakouts. Cleaning also ensures that all dead skin cells are buffed away, which helps to get the closest wax and better adhesion.

Should I use baby oil before waxing?

There’s long been an old wives tale that you should reach for the baby oil before going for a wax. Like many tales passed down from one generation to the next, this one has real truth. Applying oil to your skin before waxing will help to create a barrier between the hair and the skin, allowing the wax to be removed effortlessly and comfortably. There are plenty of pre-depilatory oils to choose from, but we prefer simple, affordable baby oil.

Simply rub a small amount into the skin to leave a slight sheen to prep the skin before waxing and you’ll feel less pain and redness post-wax. Just don’t use too much or it will prevent the wax sticking to the hairs well.

Should I use baby powder before waxing?

A sprinkling of baby powder after cleaning and oiling the skin will help to soak up any excess oils and help the wax adhere to the hair.If you’re concerned you’ve used too much oil, this is also a good tip.

Only use baby powder before your waxing treatment. It may be tempting to apply powder post-wax to remove any sticky residue – but it will only serve to clog the pores, contribute to breakouts, and prompt the occurrence of ingrown hairs.

Can you use numbing cream before waxing?

There is an old saying that ‘beauty is pain.’ However, with modern waxing techniques and some pre-wax skincare, there is no need to suffer to achieve silky smooth skin. This old wives tale can be relegated to the dustbin!

Using a topical numbing cream on the area is one way to make your next waxing session more comfortable, but we do advise caution – especially if you intend to use it on intimate areas of the body. Plus, always check the ingredients. The last thing you want is to develop a rash or allergy on your newly waxed skin.

For a more comfortable waxing treatment that doesn’t involve the cost, mess, and hassle of numbing creams, we recommend applying a warm compress before waxing instead. It’s very simple but effective.

Warm compresses relax the hair follicles, which makes the hair easier – and much less painful – to remove with wax. To apply a warm compress, simply soak a flannel in warm water, lay it over the skin and leave it for five minutes to allow the pores to open.

Post-wax you should use a cold compress to soothe any skin irritation, reduce redness and close the hair follicles.

Remember, the more often you wax, the less painful it becomes. It’s our favourite reason for booking a regular waxing appointment.

Stay out of the sun

This is good advice both pre-and post-waxing, as professional therapists will not treat sunburned skin – it’s painful, sensitive and could cause the skin to peel.

Post-waxing, your skin will be more susceptible to harmful UV rays as the hair follicles remain open and vulnerable straight after the treatment. Avoid sunbathing for a day or two on either side of your waxing appointment.

What should I do before a Brazilian wax?

It’s one of the most frequent questions our waxing therapists are asked. Here’s our quick guide to preparing your skin for a Brazilian wax:

  • Avoid using scented gels, lotions, or self-tanning creams for at least 24-hours before your waxing appointment as they may interfere with hair removal and cause irritation.
  • Have a warm shower before your appointment to open the hair follicles.
  • Gently exfoliate the area to minimise the risk of ingrown hairs.
  • Apply a small amount of baby oil, followed by a dab of baby powder to soak away any excess oils, avoiding the innermost areas.
  • Check your skin and advise your therapist of any moles or skin tags so they can be protected.
