Made in Slough, south east England, Maltesers are a spherical honeycomb malt ball enrobed in milk chocolate, and like many chocolate bars and confections of the 1930's, were advertised as a wholesome 'nourishing' energy food.

The Maltesers brand was invented in 1936 by Forrest Mars. Initially, Maltesers were called "Energy Balls". The name was finally changed and readapted for a portmanteau: "malt" corresponds to one of the ingredients present in these small balls and "teasers", from its English means "teaser".
The malt filling is exactly as I expected it to be: crunchy, but mixes up quite well with the chocolate. The taste is difficult to describe: It is milder than malt bonbons, but I can hardly draw any parallels to other sweets, Maltesers simply is unique. Together they make a chewy but smooth mixture.
Whatever the ingredients are, once mixed they are made into little pellets. These pellets are then cooked in a vacuum oven which gives them their “honeycomb” texture. Then, they are sent tumbling over lots of chocolate covered rollers to get their coating, chilled and finally bagged and boxed.
