Volume 6, Number 1
==================

IN THE BEGINNING.............

This is the first newsletter to be published using a laserjet
printer. After a master is completed, it is then used with the
duplicating process. As long as I am making changes, I
thought it might be a good idea to change the name of the
newsletter.Historical information about the Hoover Family
shows that there has been different spellings recorded over a
period of time. Some of these spellings have been Huber,
Hoover, Hover, Huever, Huwer, Hewer, Hoever, Howver,
Huver, Haver, Hueber, Huebner, Hubner, Hoover, Hover,
Oubre and Ouvre.I am sure there are others just waiting to
be found in our research.Since I could not use them all, I
decided to use the one most commonly used by these families
that came to the United States.

It is hoped that each of you will take a close look and pass
on your ideas and constructive criticisms to me.In that way,
we can make it a better document and save our heritage for
the generations to come.It is unfortunate that so much
research that was done in the past has been lost.I plan to
put copies of this newsletter in several libraries. In that way,
the research will not be lost in the future.

The Family Group Sheets are being prepared

by using the Roots III genealogical software and thence to
the WordPerfect word processing program.

Since the group sheets are being prepared by the Roots III
program, the data is already in the computer files and can be
searched for matches. With the duplicating process giving me
more time for other things, I hope to get more of the data
into a database file.A new utility that goes with the Roots
III program, called GEDCOM,will allow transfer of data to
the computers in the Family History Center in Salt Lake City,
Utah.

From Norma Norred:"Just recently returned from a trip to
Lancaster Co, PA where we visited the grave of Hans Huber,
1670-1750, at the Groffdale Mennonite Church cemetery .I
made pictures of his grave with the tombstone inscription and
pictures of the church. His tombstone was replaced in 1928.
I am willing to share with anyone interested for the cost of
SASE and price of having negative printed.I found the
Mennonite Church very helpful. When we mentioned the
name and cemetery, a lady immediately told us the exact
location of the grave.Hans Huber was my husbands 6th
grandfather. We fell in love with the area.".

A deed in Book WW, page 126, of Lancaster Co, was
discovered by Edgar Musser, shows that a Jacob Landis died
intestate leaving 200 acres near Conestoga or Strasberg,
which he acquired from Tobias Collet and others in 1722 to
his heirs and issue, Benjamin Landis; Barbara, wife of
Teodorus Buckwalter; and Anna Tinkey, deceased, late wife
of Christian Musser, of Lancaster Co, yeoman, deceased.
Christian Musser also died intestate, so his share, which had
been purchased by Benjamin Landis, was distributed to his
heirs and issue, Peter Musser (who had a wife, Fronica);
Hans Musser (who had a wife, Christina); Magdalena (wife
of Martin Hoover); Anna (wife of John Wade); and Barbara
Musser.Although the deed mentioned, which was dated
1795, does not tell when Christian died, that may have
happened ca 1741 as that year is when Anna Muser, widow
of Christian, signed a bond for faithful performance of her
responsibilities in the administration of his estate. John
Musser and Durst (Theodorus?) Buckwalter also signed this
bond.Source:The People of the Marsh, Charles Recker,

Indiana in 1840.Jacob was a widower with some small
children. One son, Moses, stated in his Civil War record that
his mother's name was Mary Goalsberry.Jacob was married
by 1842 to a Rebecca. He and his family were living in
Crawford Co, Sterling Township, Indiana in 1850.Jacob's
known children were:

1. Daniel Hoover, born in 1812, was living near father in 1850
in Crawford County. He was in 1856 census in Wapello Co,
Iowa.Jacob was living with him in 1860 census in Wapello
County.

2. Soloman Hoover born in 1829 in Pennsylvania. He was
married 19 Sep 1850 in Crawford Co, IN to Sarah Crecelious.
Jacob and Hiram Crecelious gave consent for marriage.

3. Moses Hoover born 1838 in Pennsylvania and died 18 Jul
1901 and is buried in the Taylor Cemetery near Unionville,
Appanoose Co, Iowa.Moses was in the Civil War.

4. Elizah Hoover born May 1841 in Crawford Co, IN and
married 22 Apr 1859 in Wapello Co, IA to Rebecca Jane
Chambers. He died 18 Mar 1906 and is buried at Mt. Park,
Oklahoma. He was in the Civil War.

5. Catherine Hoover born January 1843,Crawford Co, IN
and was married 14 Jul 1861 at Pitumwa, Wapello Co, IA to
Samuel Kuhns. After his death in 1883, she married Robert
S. Wright.Catherine died 9 Sep 1900 and is buried in the
Taylor Cemetery near Unionville, Appanoose Co, IA

6. Phillip (Peter) Hoover was born 1 Mar
1842 in Crawford Co, IN and died 5 Mar 1920 and is buried
at Riddle, Crawford Co, IN.His first wife was Rebecca
Hampton, daughter of Dorenge Hampton. She died in 1872
and is buried at Wapello, Louisa Co, IA.His second wife
was Rachel Ellen Shelton who he married in 1879 in Medora,
IN.She died in 1947 and is buried in Riddle, Crawford Co,
IN.

There were other children, but I am unable to state their
names.

There was a Minerva born in 1846 who married a John J.
Eaton on 11 Mar 1879 in Crawford Co but she may have
been a grandchild to Jacob.A Susannah Hoover born in
1832 in PA was married 9 May 1853 to John Shelton in
Crawford Co.A William Hoover was born in 1834 in PA
and a John Hoover was born in 1836 in PA and was married
24 Jun 1860 in Crawford Co to a Nancy A. Jones.

My mother, Lurene Jordan Kuhns passed away 4 Dec 1988
at Nebraska City, NE.My father, James Dale Kuhns, was
related to the Hoover family.Catherine Hoover Kuhns
Wright was his grandmother.

From Roy Yockey:I am still living in hopes of making a
connection with the HUBER line.My great, great
grandfather, Peter Yockey, married Christina Huber in the
early 1800's.She was the daughter of a Henry Huber.
Christina and Peter lived near Fayette in the county of
Seneca in New York around 1812 -- 1818.Where the Hubers
lived, I don't know.Where Peter was born or who his
parents were, I don't know. The trail ends in New York.
But it can't, can it?Everybody has to come from somewhere.
ED NOTE:I agree with Roy that everyone came from
somewhere, but it isn't always easy to find the answers..

7.I have not progressed per se but I have received copies of
bible pages of David Hoover and wife, Frances Hall.Among
the pages were some letters.Probably clues.

One is written to David from Uniontown, PA, dated 1853.

8.I need parents and other information about Sarah
Hoover/Hover who was born 1813, Ross Co, OH and married
Benjamin Davis, born in NJ, in 1831, Ross Co, OH.The
Hoovers possibly lived in Virginia prior to their Ohio
residence.Their children were:Sarah Jane Davis, born
1833, Ross Co, OH and married Ralph McClintock; Daniel
D. Davis born 1836; George W. Davis, born 7 Dec 1837, a
Civil War veteran; Margaret Davis born 1839 and married

9.I am interested in the following family:John Huber Sr,
born 1750-1760; wife Mary, who went from Bucks Co, PA to
Fairfield Co, OH about 1805.He appears to have had five
sons:John Jr, Peter, Philip, Rudolph and Henry.John
Huber Jr, born 1780 - 1790, probably in Bucks Co, PA, had
a wife Elizabeth (and an adopted son) when he died in 1838.
He had one son, John Huber 3d.I do not believe Elizabeth
was the mother.

John Huber 3d, born 15 Feb 1811, was a pioneer who went
from Fairfield Co, OH to Cedar Co, IA in 1839, had a wife,
Harriet A. Newell and died 9 Mar 1870.He had 10 children.
He is buried at the Masonic Cemetery in Tipton, IA.Marita
J. Huber-Kennedy

10.I am descended from Mary Catherine Hoover, born 6
Nov 1844, the daughter of Michael Hoover and Mary
Hershey (daughter of Reverend Christian Hershey).Would
like to correspond with other members of this family.
Michael Hoover Eliot (ED: From what Michael sent, he has
done a LOT of research. If you are a Hoover-Hershey, make
contact with Michael).

11. I am trying to locate the Hoover ancestry of my
g.g.grandmother, Missouri A. Hoover, born Aug 1841 (census
says Mancester, Clay Co, KY, but Clay Co says "No record").
She was a daughter of James Hoover and ???? Darwell of
Kentucky.In ca 1864 Missouri A. Hoover married Henry S.
Van Horn in Allen Co, Indiana.By 1878 they had settled in
Antwerp, Pauling Co, Ohio.Missouri died there on 10 Feb
1925 at 83 years of age.Whether or not her parents James
Hoover and ???? Darwell ever moved to Indiana/Ohio is
unknown.As Missouri was born in 1841, I "suspect"her
father, James, was born ca 1810-1820.I've no idea if
Missouri had brother or sisters but would assume so - and I
do find the name Missouri "very" unusual. Will be grateful
for any assistance on Missouri and father, James.I would
also appreciate addresses of anyone else hunting Hoovers in
KY, IN, and OH in the 1800's.Thank you so much.
Rosemary H. Steenstra(ED:Half the people who get this
news letter are looking for Hoover ancestors in one of the
above 3 states, so maybe someone will have some information
that will be of assistance).

SUCCESS STORY NUMBER XXX

"Henry, we met last year at one of the Computer Rooter
meetings and after talking with you, I typed up what little I
had about my great grandmother Mary Ann Hoover and gave
it to you.You printed my information in Volume 5, Number
2.After reading all the way through that bulletin, I was so
disappointed, because I found no information to tie into my
"roots".Well, my poor luck turned to exceptional luck in
March, this year.I heard from a Michael Hoover Eliot, who
lives in Cleveland, South Carolina.(ED:See above note
about Mr Eliot and his Hoover-Hershey family)He sent me
a Hoover chart.My Mary Ann Hoover's father's name was
John Hoover (a very common name). On that Hoover
chart, I found a John Hoover born 1808 in Dauphin Co, PA.
Also, the chart said that John had 8 children but the names
were not listed. So I wrote to Mr. Eliot to ask if had the 8
children's names.Mr. Eliot sent me an up-dated Hoover
chart with the names of John Hoover's 8 children.Lo and
behold, there was my great grandmother, Mary Ann, as his
3d child. The Hoover chart goes all the way back to my
g.g.g.g.g grandfather.After receiving the up-dated Hoover
chart, I decided to re-read your bulletin Volume 5, Number
2, again.I finally found 3 ladies inquiring about the same
Hoover line that I am descended from. So, I am writing to
these ladies.I am ecstatically happy about my good fortune,
so I just had to share it with you."Fern Holcomb (ED:
Thanks Fern, we are glad that you shared this with us.It
makes me work harder when I hear of someone's successes
as I just 'know' that I am next!).

Fern also said:"Henry, occasionally, you list from the LDS
IGI, for different states. Have you at any time done the state
of Iowa?(ED:In this issue - how's that for service ? ).

Also:Do you want Family Group Records of my family from
John Hoover down to me and my grandchildren?(ED:I
sure do.I would like to get them from everyone who has not
yet sent them to me.)"
----------

Speaking of the IGI - we were weren't we.I just received a
letter yesterday from a friend who is in Salt Lake City.It
said that the IGI has been put on CD-ROM and atthe SLC
Library you can transfer that data into an ASCII or
GEDCOM file onto a computer diskette and asked that I call
her at her hotel the night I received the letter.Last night I
called and she offered to put all the Hoover data she could
find in the IGI onto computer diskettes and send them to
me.WOW!Soon I should have all that good stuff available
and it will be shared with all of you.It is my understanding
that the information will be in alphabetical order rather than
the normal state by state order that the IGI uses on
microfiche.I am sure it will be most useful in our common
researching. She knew of no plans to put the CD ROM
method into the local LDS libraries at this time but I am sure
such things will be forthcoming in the future.Ah, the
wonders of computers and the assistance they can give us in
our research and storage of data.

ERRORS AND CORRECTIONS

The Editor got a little confused with some of the information
printed in Vol 5 No 3 that was received from Robert S.
Pinkerton. He writes as follows.I would like to correct a
couple of items:Stanley Brown Preston married Lillian
Dorthea Jane Huston, born 9 Nov 1908, Battle Creek,
Michigan.Notice that there is no "O" in the way they spell
Huston. Her father's middle initial was 'F' in lieu of 'J'.

Also, the bible entry I sent you was from my mother's friend
Rose DeWild Bent and had nothing to do with my wife's
Hoovers. It was sent just for your information and may be of
interest to some of your readers as was the other information
from Phillipsburg. It has no tie in with my wife's Hoovers,
however, I thought it might benefit some of your other
readers who may not have been aware of that information.

Also, Nellie May Hoover married John Sidney Preston, born
19 Oct 1875, Parshallville, Michigan and died Oakland Co,
Michigan 9 Jun 1955.Also we have Nellie middle name as
Mae in lieu of May.

Thank you Robert for the corrections.

HISTORY:The Hoover-Huber Family Association began
with correspondence to other persons researching the
Hoover-Huber line.

In April 1984, the newsletter was formalized and now it is
published every 3 months.

PURPOSE:To gather information about all persons in the
Hoover-Huber family group. This includes many different
spellings. This information is being entered into a computer
(an AT with 120 megabyte fixed disk).

INFORMATION:A large amount of information is being
furnished by correspondents who have sent copies of their
Family Group Sheets. Many persons also send copies of
newspaper articles, various governmental records, cemetery
information, letters, copies of bible entries and other
information that they find in their research. All of this is
being entered into the computer so that it can be shared with
others. In addition, research by the editor is printed in each
issue.

QUERIES:Queries are also printed in the newsletter from
correspondents regarding their Hoover-Huber family line.

COST:For the first 5 years, the newsletter was furnished
free of charge to all researchers.Effective with the first issue
of 1989, the fee for a subscription for at least four issues per
year was set at $15.00 and is in effect at the present time.

==================

Summer is here and is a time for renewing family
acquaintances and associations with friends. While visiting,
keep in mind that a few genealogical questions may bear
some fruit; even from those with whom you have discussed
"everything" in the past.My wife told her mother that she
found certain information in a census record about her aunt's
husband and family. Her mother proceeded to give the
"complete" information on that family and that can now be
added to the database.

The many letters received about the new format of the
newsletter being an improvement was well received by your
editor. As I become more familiar with the new tools, I hope
that more improvements can be made so that you can obtain
more use from the information that is available.

Some persons have asked about getting a copy of first five
years for their files. No extra printed copies exist.I am in
the process of changing them from the format of the old
printer to the new printer. When I am finished, I will
announce that they are ready and will be available for the
actual cost of printing and postage to mail them. They
should be ready within a month or two.Hopefully some of
the many errors that were in the originals can be eliminated.

A considerable amount of the data that I have collected has
been entered into the computer in the months since I
obtained the laser printer. The new printing format has
made more time available for research and preserving data.
I now have over 40,000 persons named Hoover, Huber, etc
and their collateral lines entered into the computer with
another 20 - 25 thousand to go.

I hope that before I complete all of them, you will have
furnished me with more Hoovers, their ancestors and their
descendants. My own research is so slow that I need help in
tracking down all those Hoover family members.

When sending information, any format will do but Family
Group Sheets are the best way of getting me the information
in a way that will help reduce my error rate in data input.

Annette Kunselman Burgert published Eighteenth Century
Emigrants from German-Speaking Lands to North America,
Volume I: The Northern Kraichgau. Her research has raised
some questions regarding the ancestry of President Herbert
Clark Hoover. So that you can better understand her
research, the following is extracted from the Introduction.
The most commonly accepted territory for the Kraichgau is
an area of about 1000 square miles and is located east of the
Rhine River and south of the Neckar River and larger towns
in this area are named Sinsheim and Eppingen.Since the
smaller communities are still generally separated physically
from one another, they retain their identity. It is good to
understand that within each village's territory are the village
itself and the fields, meadows and woodlands around it.
Several people from this area emigrated to America in the
early 1700 era.

247.Andreas Huber, from Ittlingen, came to America in
1738 aboard the ship, Two Sisters. From the Ittlingen
Lutheran KB:Johannes Huber and wife Ottilia had:
1.Joh. Heinrich bp. 17 Oct 1712; died young
2.Erasmus bp. 19 Mar. 1714
3.Johannes bp. 5 Jan 1716
4.Sabina bp. 22 Mar 1718
5.Maria Barbara b. -- Feb 1720
6.Anna Maria b. 1 Dec 1721
7.Andreas b. 13 May 1724
8.Joh. Friederich b. 19 Jul 1726; died young
9.Maria Margaretha b. 5 Feb 1729
10. Anna Maria b. 28 Jan 1731; died young
11. Maria Barbara b. 16 Mar 1732

Pennsylvania records:

The Andreas Huber on this ship has been previously
identified as the ancestor of President Herbert Hoover. He
was first identified as an immigrant from Trippstadt (National
Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol XV, no. 1, mar 1927) and
then subsequently identified as an immigrant from Ellerstadt
(National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol XVII, no. 1, Mar.
1929).It seems more logical that the Andreas Huber who
came at the age of 15 in 1738 is the Andreas b. 13 may 1724
in Ittlingen. This hypothesis is strengthened by the fact that
he arrived on the same ship with Joh. Gottlieb Brauninger,
Joh. Martin Brauninger, Joh. Michael Oesterlin, Dietrich
Benedict, Hans Peter Sailer, Pleickerd Dietrich Sailer and
Wolfgang Braun. All of these names appear in the Ittlingen
records and several of them are provable immigrants from
that village.Andreas Huber then settled for a time in
Lancaster Co.Later Huber immigrants from Ittlingen also
settled in Lancaster. [See Hans Jacob Huber, Ludwig Huber
and Philip Dietrich Huber, 1742 arrivals, S-H 327] In further
support of this theory, it seems unlikely that a 15 year old
boy would be travelling alone.Yet no other immigrant on
this ship has ever been identified from Ellerstadt nor any
village in that vicinity. There are no marriage records
available for Ittlingen in this time period, but it seems
possible that there might be a relationship, perhaps by
marriage, with one or more of the several identifiable
passengers on this ship, and the Hubers of Ittlingen.Andreas
Huber later married a daughter of Michael Pfautz, an
immigrant from the nearby village of Rohrback (near
Sinsheim).

It should be pointed out that the ages given on this ship list
are incorrect.Dietrich Benedict, a provable immigrant from
Ittlingen, is listed as age 30; he was actually born in 1710.
Pleickerd Dietrich Sailer, listed as age 24, was actually born
in 1719.Several other surnames on this ship appear in the
records at Ittlingen and nearby villages:Ziegler, Funk,
Geiger, Wagner and Schwartz. But exact identification of
these immigrants with the more common surnames is
impossible without further supporting evidence. This is
complicated by the age discrepancies on this list.

FAMILY GROUP SHEETS

As I am catching up on my data input, I want to make sure
I include all of your information as well as my personal
research.A side product will be that I will be able to
connect each of you who are researching a specific individual.
In that way, it will insure that you can make contact and
compare notes directly with those who are researching the
same families. So, please send me your Family Group
Sheets.

ELECTRONIC GENEALOGY

In addition to this newsletter, your editor has been operating
an electronic bulletin board dedicated to genealogical
research for over 8 years. In addition to having files that
contain much research data, family ahnentafels (only a few
are on a Hoover line) and research tips, this bulletin board
participates in several genealogical conferences.Currently
there are conferences on "general" Genealogical Queries,
Jewish Genealogy, Missing Persons, Spanish Genealogy,
North Carolina genealogy (specific to North Carolina) and
Oregon Trail (about the people who crossed the US headed
for "Oregon Country").Also there are special conferences on
several computer genealogy programs in which better ways to
use the programs and possible program enhancements are
discussed. The genealogy programs covered are Roots III,
Family Roots, Personal Ancestral File (PAF) and The Family
Edge.

The genealogy conference network began in 1986 between
Downeast Roots in Rye, New Hampshire and Commsoft
BBS, Mountain View, California with Dynasty BBS (operated
by your editor) becoming the third, tagging along a month
later to form the original conference and has now expanded
to over 150 bulletin boards throughout the United States
mainland. Also, there are boards operating in Hawaii. We
have several boards in Canada and just recently added 4
boards in England and there has been a dozen messages
within the last month from Australia and 2-3 messages from
South Africa.I am not sure that Australia and South Africa
have decided to become a permanent attachment. There is
work being done in trying to connect to Holland, Belgium
and France. One of the nice things about this network is the
participants and the way they they work together. There are
about 100 messages a day (from all the genealogy oriented
conferences) that come and go to each bulletin board by
telephone. These messages aretransferred from one board
to another at a time when the telephone costs are least
expensive, usually between 1 a.m. and 3.am each morning.In
addition, the messages are compressed by the sender so that
the total time on the phone is much less than normal. The
messages are decompressed at the receiving bulletin board
and posted in a readable form for the bulletin board users.
The bulletin board operators, in most instances, pay for the
telephone calls so that there is no charge to the users. As an
example, here are some messages that were entered
pertaining to persons named Hoover:

Eddie Randolph entered the following message for Dale E.
Hoover (who probably does not have a computer/modem):
I am interested in comment on Knox Co, Ohio information
on Hoovers.Emanual Hoover in the 1850 census. He was
the son of John A. Hoover from Holmes Co., OH and
grandson of Henry Hoover (Hover) of Mercer Co, PA and
Sussex Co, NJ.His father, Henry Hover and Uncle Manual
Hover were Revolutionary War Vets.I would like to
correspond if you have a connection to this.

This message was from Jim Stout to Eddie Randolph:Jacob
A. Hoover born 15 Nov 1810, Muskingum Co, OH, died 24
Jul 1901 in Livingston Co, MO.His wife Esther born Jun
1822 in OH.Jacob was a blacksmith as was his brother,
Moses John Hoover, who lived in adjoining Breckenridge
Twp, Caldwell Co, MO.If you see any connection let me
know.My STOUT line was in Susses Co, (now Warren Co)
New Jersey. We could probably exchange some horror
stories about NJ research.

This message was from Carol Montrose to your editor:
"Henry, If you know of anyone who is working on the
Hoovers from the Mahoning (originally Columbianna and
Trumbull Counties of Ohio) I would appreciate you either
giving them my address or theirs to me.Possible names were
listed in a probate record as Hiram C., Catarina, Amos and
Louisa and they are either connected to the Rummel or the
Fosnaucht family or both.Possible cousins are Joseph,
Peggy, Sophia, Susannah, Elizabeth, Patterson and Catherine
Rummel who may have moved to Van Wert Co, Ohio about
1847.I do not know the residence of the Hoover children
but their mother may have either been a Fosnoucht or
Rummel.I hope you can understand this. Thanks, Carol
Montrose

When I hooked up to the Oregon Trails conference, there
was a comment about DLC and I asked what that was.Mary
Lawlor of Eugene, Oregon answered (I am including because
others may have the same question) as follows:

"In 1842, Congress passed a bill to reward settlers who might
move to Oregon by giving them properly under certain
restrictions. The bill failed to become law but did prompt an
emigration to Oregon and the organization of a provisional
government by the settlers in the Oregon region.Special
provisions were:

Art. 1 Any person now holding, or hereafter wishing to
establish a claim by natural boundaries, or by marks at the
corners, and on the lines of such claim, and have the extent
and boundaries of said claim recorded in the office of the
territorial recorder, in a book to be kept by him for that
purpose, within twenty days from the time of making said
claim.Provided, that those who shall already be in
possession of land, shall be allowed one year from the
passage of this act to file a description of the claim to the
recorder's office.

The claimants had 6 months from date of claim to make
improvements on the property - No individual could hold a
claim of more than one square mile or 640 acres - often a
husband and wife would file separate claims - I believe that
the majority of the DLC's have been copied and if you have
any names you want checked I have them and would be glad
to do it for you. There usually is a listing of where the
people came from, births and sometimes marriage
information.Glad you are enjoying the Oregon Trail. If you
wish more information of the DLC's please send me your
home address and I willmail you several pages of info."

Naturally, I answered the message and mentioned by research
on the Hoover name, specifically on Felix Jackson Hoover
and his estate administrator, **** Rafferty.

She replied with another message a few days later:Donation
Land Claim Supplement to Volume 1 published by the
Portland Forum shows the following:

As you can see, the use of a computer and modem can be
another resource that can be used to your advantage. If you
have a computer and a modem (if you don't, you should
seriously consider such a purchase), try contacting a bulletin
board in your area.If they do not carry the genealogy
conferences (known as an echo), leave a message to the
system operator and ask if they might consider carrying it.
Obviously, not all messages are about a Hoover family but I
know that most of you must be researching some family other
than Hoover.

++++++ Further research at the Portland Public Library,
Portland, Oregon by your editor turned up the following
additional information:

necessary on this).

Along these same lines, I received a packet of information
and some family group sheets from Juanita C. Wright who is
trying to identify the parents of Sarah Hoover who married
Andrew Miller Clark on 5 Sep 1850.These were her great
grandparents and they bought and sold land in Macoupin Co,
Illinois.

In addition, she sent some more information on Macoupin

the HOOVER-MINTHORN house (boyhood home of
President Herbert HOOVER) and thought you might be
interested. The house was placed on the National Register
of Historic Places in 1975 and is located in Newberg, Oregon.
I am not sure if Newberg is actually within the boundaries of
Washington County, but if it isn't, then it is pretty close.

The house is owned and operated by the National Society of
Colonial Dames of America in the State of Oregon and is
open to the public Wednesday - Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.

The little blurb on the back says: ".... a memorial to Herbert
HOOVER, 31st President of the United States... He was
born in West Branch, Iowa on August 10, 1874, and lived
here from 1885 - 1888... with his aunt and uncle, the

purchased the house in 1884 when he was appointed

The above census information is not ALL the information
from census records of 1850 and 1870.It is just from some
notes that I found 'loose' in a folder.I know there is more
but just thought I would throw them in here since I found the
note.(Don't you just love the Editor's filing system ? )

The following was sent to me by Nancy Cowan, 8333 N. W.
33, Bethany, OK 73008.While most of the information was
published in a previous newsletter, I am including it for
several reasons.1) It contains more information than I had
previously printed 2) It was published in The East
Kentuckian in June 1989 by Juanita S. Halstead of Scott
Depot, West Virginia and, as indicated above, was sent by
someone in Oklahoma.Genealogy queries sure do get
around!

REED GENEALOGICAL ENIGMA

(Editor's note:This ladies [sic] letter telling me of her
genealogical puzzle, was such I though I should try to rework
it slightly and share it with you, but without changing its story
or the desire and need for an answer.)

In the Lemaster Family series, I note you list 45A. FRANCIS
LEMASTER and RACHEL READ, and then list two
children born in Floyd Co., KY.I want to know more about
this Rachel Reed (Which incidentally was my mother's
name).

My John Wesley Reed was in Floyd County from ca 1816
until 1821.He was apprenticed to Abraham Beavers to learn
the shoe making trade. Then in 1821 he left Abraham
Beavers.Per the Court Records John Wesley Reed also used
the name John Hoover at times. Our family tradition is that
he was raised by the Hoover family in KY.We don't know
his parentage.I suspect his mother may have been a Hoover.
John Wesley named a son, Henry James Hoover Reed,
indicating some connection or leaning toward the Hoover
family.

Some of my questions are why was he in Floyd County?
How did he obtain his apprenticeship? Was he related to the
Reeds there?Hoovers?There is a period of 1821 to 1830
we don't know his whereabouts.

John Wesley's youngest son, Amanuel, my grandfather, was
also a shoemaker for the family so apparently the trade was
handed down in the family.

John Wesley Reed married in Tazewell Co., VA, in 1830,
Nancy Jane Christian, dau of Thomas and Louisa (Harman)
Christian, and a grandau of Mathias Harman (famous long-
hunter, acquaintance of Daniel Boone and founder of
Harman's Station in Johnson Co., KY.).Thomas and Louisa
(Harman) Christian must have been in KY for a time because
they have a son, David, who was born there.

Abraham Beavers, a member of the Cornstalk Militia of
Floyd County, was a brother to Robert "Robin" Beavers, who
married Catherine Harman (a sister to Louisa who m John
Wesley Reed).Robert and Catherine made their home in
Tazewell Co., VA.

John Wesley Reed is really an enigma.Per family stories he
left the family he was staying with at one time in his life due
to ill treatment. He also told the family he would not return
to KY even though he had an inheritance due him there.
John had many acres of land in Tazewell County, VA, and in
1834 was made a Magistrate there. It appears he either came
a long way, or was more than a waif.

With the connection of the Reed name to the Lemaster
surname, I am hopeful that someone from their research in
Eastern Kentucky can shed some light on my John Wesley
Reed predicament.

Lillian Hoover sent the following:"Under separate cover, I
am mailing a copy of our HOOVER book that my daughter
and I have printed. As you can see, it mostly concerns the
HOOVER family in Pike County (Illinois). Also including a
copy of the index for our other two books."I received the
book and it is nicely done in a stiff backing with
mimeographed pages. The last page is numbered 88 but
there are a few page numbers that end in A which means
there are over 88 pages.

For any of you who are related a Hoover family in Pike Co,
IL, this appears to be a good buy at $10 plus postage. She
also has available a book on Obituaries and another on
Family Stories for $10 each plus postage or all three for $25
plus postage.

The beginning states "This is our story from the birth of
Adam (Huber) Hoover in 1732 until the present time.Adam
Hoover was a Swiss-German immigrant who came to the
United States on the ship, Salley, in 1767 and signed the oath
of allegiance in Philadelphia, PA.Family went to
Washington Co, MD.He and wife, Catherine, had children
of George, Christian, Samuel, Margaret, Catherine,
Frederick, John and William.Adam died in Washington Co,
MD.The book includes a copy of his will and several
pictures. You can obtain a copy of any of her books by
writing to:Mrs. Lillian C. Hoover, Box 69, Huntsville, IL
62344 (I would not procrastinate too long as there is probably
a limited number of the books available).

(ED NOTE:Jackson apparently was born on the
Oregon Trail and another document states he
was born in Idaho.I do not know which is
accurate, if either or both!)

As further research is done on the Hoover
families living in Oregon and those living in
Macoupin County, Illinois, it appears
definite that they are, at least partially,
the same families.Since Jacob Hoover
married the 2 sisters from the Cave family
and the Reverend Cave also went to Oregon, it
is apparent that this is the same Cave family
that lived in Macoupin Co, Illinois. It is
also appears definite that Jacob Hoover and
Mary Hoover Raffety (or Rafferty in Illinois)
were brother & sister, along with Felix
Jackson Hoover and they were the children of
Felix Hoover (whose will is listed above) and
Sarah Hoover. There is some other tidbits of
information still available in Oregon that
needs some more investigation. Some of the
above Hoovers were signatures to various
legal documents but it is unknown if they
were related in any way to those families.
As I get more specific information, it will
be printed.

While I feel that I am getting closer to
solving the puzzle that will lead me to the
parents of my great grandfather, John Hoover,
the information for making the exact match
has not yet been found.

SORRY 'BOUT THAT

The last issue, Volume 6, Number 3, 1989 was
a complete disaster.After correcting all
the errors that I could find, I gave it to my
wife for proofing and she returned it with
several errors that needed fixing.I
promptly made the necessary changes and then
forgot to give it back to her for proofing
again.Naturally I made some mistakes in
correcting the mistakes. Then to top it all
off, I did not even send that copy.I
printed a copy that was about 3-4 previous
editing and correcting sessions ago which had
the wrong page numbering indicators set.
Then, it was printed on both sides of the
paper when I only wanted it printed on 1
side. And to top it all off, some of the
people were not included on the labels when
they were printed.Consequently, they did
not receive their copy.

As a result, another issue was printed and
put into the mail to each of you.You should
have received it by now.I know a lot of you
did because you told me.WHEW !

CONTINUED FROM VOLUME 6, NUMBER 2

In 1983, Annette Kunselman Burgert published Eighteenth Century Emigrants
from German-Speaking Lands to North America, Volume I: The Northern
Kraichgau. Her research has raised some questions regarding the ancestry
of President Herbert Clark Hoover. The hypotheses that Andreas Huber,
born 13 May 1724, in Ittlingen is the ancestor of President Herbert
Hoover is strengthened by the fact that he arrived on the same ship with
Joh. Gottlieb Brauninger, Joh. Martin Brauninger, Joh. Michael Oesterlin,
Dietrich Benedict, Hans Peter Sailer, Pleickerd Dietrich Sailer and
Wolfgang Braun. All of these names appear in the Ittlingen records and
several of them are provable emigrants from that village.Andreas Huber
then settled for a time in Lancaster Co.Later Huber emigrants from
Ittlingen also settled in Lancaster. [See Hans Jacob Huber, Ludwig Huber
and Philip Dietrich Huber, 1742 arrivals, S-H 327] In further support of
this theory, it seems unlikely that a 15 year old boy would be travelling
alone.Yet no other emigrant on this ship has ever been identified from
Ellerstadt nor any village in that vicinity. There are no marriage
records available for Ittlingen in this time period, but it seems
possible that there might be a relationship, perhaps by marriage, with
one or more of the several identifiable passengers on this ship, and the
Hubers of Ittlingen.Andreas Huber later married a daughter of Michael
Pfautz, an emigrant from the nearby village of Rohrback (near Sinsheim).
Other parts of her research are presented here for your review and
consideration.

A couple of years ago, I received some information from Juanita C. Wright
but it had little or no significance at that time.It would appear now
is the time to print it as this information may help explain some of the

Back in 1986, I received a package from Betty Collicott about her side
of the Hoover family. In 1987, I received a package from Sherry Arlotta
about her side of the Hoover family that were from Macoupin County, IL.
After a "quick" read, it was promptly buried in the inner sanctum of my
filing system. With the Oregon information, their packages are of more
value in trying to unravel this puzzle.

While there is no doubt that some of the Oregon Hoovers are definitely
connected to some of the Hoovers of Macoupin Co, Illinois, there are
still some families that need more documentation.Jacob Hoover of Oregon
who was born in Green Co, KY in 1814 is the son of Felix Hoover of
Macoupin Co, Illinois who died in 1835.Is this Felix Hoover the one who
is listed in the Fleming Co, KY 1800 tax list. What connection does he
have with the Jacob Hoover listed in the same Fleming County, KY tax
list? There is a Jacob Hoover listed in the Macoupin Co, Illinois census
records for 1850.Jacob Hoover's wife was Elizabeth Followell.John
Hoover of Brown County, Indiana was the husband of Nancy Followell.
Elizabeth and Nancy were sisters and daughters of William Followell of
Brown County, Indiana.Alexander Baker of Macoupin Co, Illinois was the
husband of Lydia Hoover. Was she the sister of Jacob Hoover?Since
Alexander Baker gave information about Felix Hoover of 1835, there is a
probability that he was connected to Felix. Was this through his wife
who may have been the sister of Felix?Things get curiouser and
curiouser!

QUERIES

1.My great-grandfather's name was Jean Huber. He emigrated from
N?remberg, Germany (Bavaria) in 1866.His wife and their four daughters
followed in 1870.They settled in St Louis, MO.Family rumor has his
birthplace as N?remberg and that the family was originally from the
Alsace-Lorraine area.I have discovered a Jean Huber, merchant
(Kaufmann) in the 1863 N?remberg city directory. His birthdate is 21 Nov
1823.This is all the information that I have except that in St. Louis
he earned his living as a bookkeeper for drug companies.Anne M. Homan,
address below.

2.I'm starting on the genealogy of my father's side of the family.I'm
a descendant of one of the many Christian Hoover (Huber) 's that arrived
prior to 1775.My great, great, great grandfather is Martin Hoover, died
12 Oct 1841, age 66 years, 9 months, 25 days.According to the Franklin
Co, PA history, he came from Adams County, PA in 1816.He is reportedly
the son of Christian, the original immigrant. All my other grandfathers
are buried with Martin in a Hoover-Bert Graveyard in Newburg, PA or at
the Mowersville Brethren in Christ Church, Franklin County, PA.My great
grandfather and his sisters founded this church in 1891 beside the family
graveyard at Mowersville. With these graveyards and my great
grandfather's family bible, I have a decent start.William Leichliter
Hoover, address below.

3.The Hoover-Huber-Hover family I belong to is not related to the
Lancaster Co, PA, North Carolina, Southern Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and
former President Herbert Hoover.I would be interested in exchanging
Hoover information if you fit the following family:Johanes Hendricus
(John Henry) Huber ca 1705-1770.Came to New Jersey (Sussex County -
Dutch Reformed).Henry Hover, Revolutionary War, New Jersey, moved to
Mercer Co, PA, 1797, died 1804.He had 14 children.Emanuel Hover,
Revolutionary War, New Jersey, moved to Washington Co, PA 1795 and in
1815 to Trumbull Co, Ohio.He had 10 children.(Trumbull is adjacent
to Mercer Co, PA).Emanuels children centered in Allen Co, OH and
Trumbull.Henry's children centered in Logan Co, OH and Mercer Co, PA.
From there they went to Holmes Co, OH; Vermilion Co, IL; Missouri-Kansas;
Wisconsin and California.Dale E. Hoover, address below.

4.My grandfather was Charles A. Hoover, born 1878, Wilkesport, Ontario.
His father was Joseph Hoover, born 1854 in Ontario.Joseph's father,
Thomas, was born 1816 in either Ontario or Pennsylvania. His father,
Francis Hoover married Margaret Farnham.Thomas, Joseph and Charles all
lived in St Clair County, Michigan.Janet Turk, address below.

5.I am searching for John Hoover, born in PA and married Elizabeth
Shingledecker in Greene Co, Ohio in 1809.He died in Greene Co, Missouri
in 1845.Mrs Richard Maddox, address below.

6.Does anyone know whatever happened to Benjamin Hoover and his wife,
Catherine Wenger?Catherine Wenger was born in 1840 in Franklin Co, PA.
Presumably Benjamin Hoover was also born around 1840 in Franklin Co, PA.
They left Franklin County shortly after marriage and went to Chicago, IL.
I am trying to compile a list of the descendants of the father and mother
of Catherine Wenger.I can't find Benjamin & Catherine Hoover in the
1870, 1880 or 1900 census for Chicago, IL.There is no index for 1870
and the 1880 index only includes families with children under age 10 and
they probably did not qualify.Richard Winger, address below.
