Today I am sharing a must have on our family Thanksgiving table, a Homemade Cranberry Sauce Recipe with Orange. It is the perfect compliment to your holiday meal.

Homemade Cranberry Sauce Recipe

I will be honest, our family did not start making homemade cranberry sauce until one day I decided to add it on the menu in my early twenties. Yes, I can now say that (early twenties) now that I am in my mid thirties…ok I am getting off track because I didn’t realize how time is flying! My grandmother and mother never made homemade cranberry sauce. They would work very long hours preparing pies, sides, fresh rolls, turkey, but never cranberry sauce. I was very curious, so I thought I would give homemade cranberry sauce a try one Thanksgiving, and to my surprise everyone absolutely loved it! Not only is it a crowd pleaser, it is so easy to make. With that said my family has never went back to the canned cranberry jelly and that is the simple truth. Today I am bringing you a recipe that has a small twist to the original cranberry sauce and one I think you are going to love. I know you are ready for the recipe so let’s get started!

Ingredients

Scale

  • 12 oz fresh or frozen cranberries (approximately 3 cups), rinsed
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice with pulp
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. In a medium sauce pan dissolve sugar in 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 of orange juice over medium low heat.
  2. Then add cranberries and return to a gentle boil for 10 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat.
  4. Serve warm or let the sauce completely cool.
  5. Refrigerate until ready to serve if needed.

Notes

The sauce thickens as it cools. Garnish with fresh orange zest for presentation. Not only is this sauce a great addition to the Thanksgiving table, it also makes wonderful jelly for toast, bagels, and rolls. This recipe makes approximately 2 cups, double if needed.

**If you prefer to not use the orange juice, you may replace it with 1/2 cup water for a total of 1 cup, and increase the sugar to 1 cup as well.

This sounds really good. I can’t help but see the similarity to the recipe I posted yesterday from Tyler Florence’s cranberry sauce with orange. Either way I’ve done his recipe and it came out fantastic! This sounds awesome with keeping all of that orange pulp for flavor. This is such a classic pairing… yum-me!

Hey I’m just wondering how long this would last? If I was to make it now would it keep in the freezer or in a mason jar until Christmas?
    Thanks

I recommend only keeping the cranberry sauce in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. I have never personally froze prepared Cranberry Sauce, but from research I found you can freeze it up to a month. Hope this helps, thank you for stopping by!

Hello, I saw this recipe and fell in love! My daughter is getting married October 3rd and I’ve been trying to figure out what I can do as far as party gifts for the women and I think this would be great considering Thanksgiving is the next month. My question is, If I wanted to do about 30-40 jars, what size jars would I use and how long will the sauce last? Would it have to be refrigerated if I keep it room temperature in my apartment?

This looks so good. I have a taste for turkey to go with it. My Mother also put orange in her sauce. She would put ground up oranges, but using the juice with the pulp is much easier. Thank you for this recipe.

My husband brought home whole cranberries thinking they would be sweet like other berries. Instead of allowing them to go to waste I stumbled across this recipe. Very simple and easy. I made no modifications and it came out better than anticipated. Thanks!

FAQs

Why won't my cranberry sauce set? ›

One possibility is that you may not have used enough sugar: Sugar helps the sauce firm up, so be sure to use the full amount called for in a recipe. Another possibility is that the cranberries need to boil for longer, releasing their pectin and ensuring a jelly consistency.

Why is my homemade cranberry sauce runny? ›

Mistake #2: Your Cranberry Sauce Is Too Runny

You may have added too much liquid to the cranberries. In addition to pectin, cranberries contain water, which means you only need to add a splash of liquid to get the cooking going. Add too much and you'll be stirring at the stove much longer than expected.

How to improve cranberry sauce? ›

Adding a teaspoon or two of fresh lemon or orange zest, a tablespoon of chopped candied peel, or even a splash of juice to your canned sauce will brighten flavors and bring in some homemade flavor.

What's healthier homemade or store bought cranberry sauce? ›

Nutritional Facts Face-Off

The homemade cranberry sauce has nearly half the calories, carbohydrates, and sugars compared to the store brand. It also has more fiber as well as potassium!

How do you fix cranberry sauce that didn't gel? ›

Does homemade cranberry sauce thicken when it cools? ›

Reduce heat to a low boil and cook for 10 minutes, until the berries have all burst. Remove from heat. Serve warm, room temperature, or chilled. Cranberry sauce will thicken as it cools.

Why is my cranberry sauce upside down? ›

But why? Ocean Spray says this is to get the cranberry sauce out in one intact piece. “The rounded part of the can that looks like the bottom has an air bubble in it,” Ocean Spray's representative explains. The bubble is there so you can “break the seal the sauce makes with the can.”

What to do if cranberry sauce is too thick? ›

If the sauce is too thick when done, and it likely will be, add a little fresh water (see Cook's Notes below). Note that the sauce will thicken more while it cools. Once completely cooled, adjust the consistency further, only if needed. Keep tightly covered in the refrigerator if making it ahead of time.

What role do sugar and water play in making cranberry sauce? ›

Instead, the pectin polymers will bind to each other, giving the cranberry mixture more and more structure. The sweet sugar-water molecules get trapped in between the pectin chains, resulting in a tasty cranberry sauce!

But that's not the case for prepared cranberry sauces, where prices are up. Lochner pointed out that processors set those prices, not growers, and that there are higher input costs unrelated to berries — like “processing the fruit and getting it to market.” Ocean Spray isn't immune either.

What makes cranberry sauce good? ›

The reason cranberry sauce goes so well with Thanksgiving dinner has everything to do with tannins. Located in the cranberry's skin, tannins bind with protein and fats—such as turkey, gravy, and buttery mashed potatoes—much the way a tannin-forward red wine, like Chianti, pairs with a fatty steak.

How to fix too sweet cranberry sauce? ›

Cranberry sauce is supposed to be a balance of sweet and tart. The sauce acts as a cleansing port in a tumultuous storm of fat and salt, but the effect is lost if the sauce is too sweet. Luckily, there is a very easy way to fix an over-sugared homemade sauce: You just need a little citric acid.
