I've always been one for a ~complicated~ hair situation. Like, I tried red hair days before moving to New York City, never shied away from some extra-long hair extensions, and debuted fishtail braids to the entirety of my eighth-grade class. But after scouring Instagram, I'm realizing that the latest fall 2023 hair trends are kinda the opposite, and I'm considering changing my ways (hey, I'm a busy, corporate girl now, mmk?). Because, actually, fall 2023's biggest hair looks are fairly subdued, featuring sleek buns and ponytails, warm shades, and layered haircuts.

Hairstylists Garren agrees: “People want to get back to styles that are easy for them to handle with styling and are classically gorgeous, since we are going back to the office and normal life." So what does that mean? "Think healthy, voluminous, classic looks, with modern twists and layers,” he says. I rounded up a handful of inspo images to get myself thinking about which fall 2023 hair trend I’ll copy. Plus, I got some tips from Garren, four other hairstylists, and two hair colorists for their tips on making it work at home. Keep scrolling, babes

1

Warm fall-hair trend

It’s like a rite of passage to ~go darker and cooler~ for fall, but this year, hair colorist Abby Haliti says clients are a lot more interested in adding warm dimension throughout their hair. Why? She says it’s because it’s typically more low-maintenance and soft, and it helps keep your skin looking bright and summery even after the temps drop. She recommends caramel- or honey-toned highlights, depending on the depth of your base.

2

Ballerina buns

Balletcore” is about to be the biggest fall beauty trend (just peek at the fall/winter runways at Sandy Liang and Zimmerman). If you want to try the trend on your own hair, opt for a sleek, polished bun, like the one above, and make sure to tuck in any loose ends with a bobby pin.

3

Italian bobs for fall 2023

TikTok deemed it an “Italian summer,” but the choppy bob with bangs that it inspired will continue on through the fall. “I think we will also start to see more playfulness with fringe, particularly with bob haircuts,” hairstylist Aaron Grenia says. For a softer version of the trend, you can try a long, layered bob with blended curtain bangs, or do it big with a chin-length chop and heavy bangs, as seen on Simona Tabasco.

4

Old Hollywood-waves trend

After seeing all of Margot Robbie’s retro looks on the Barbie press tour, I’m more excited than ever to try out some of the Old Hollywood looks from runways, like this one shown at Richard Quinn. To get the look for fall 2023, follow the lead of hairstylist Sam McKnight by spritzing on a ton of hairspray to finish and set the look. Not only will it keep these finger-waves in place, but it’ll also add major shine.

5

Bow hair accessories

Balletcore doesn’t stop, bb. Bows are the easiest way to try the 2023 trend with zero commitment or styling skills. Add a velvet-bow scrunchie to a low-ponytail (as seen on Sadie Sink above), stick a few clips around your hairline to pull back bangs or layers, or tie up a ponytail or braid with some ribbon. The bow opportunities are simply endless.

6

Choppy cuts for fall 2023

Gothcore was the star of so many fall runways (hi, Dior, Versace, Rodarte, for starters). And a choppy, majorly textured cut like this one is essentially the haircut version. This fall, “we’ll be seeing lots of layered styles that create a feathered, grungy look,” says hairstylist Kim Kimble, “including layers with wispy curtain bangs.”

7

Butterfly-cut fall-hair trend

Yup, even longer hair lengths can try the shag style with the “butterfly cut” this fall, which combines long and short layers to create volume and movement. It usually features curtain bangs, like Matilda Djerf’s famous cut, or it can be a lil grungier with a wispy full bang (see Camila Cabello above). To give some lift and soft hold to your layers, Garren recommends raking a hair mousse through damp hair before heat-styling—he likes R+Co Highest Volumizing Mousse for thick hair; I’m a fan of JVN Volumizing Foam.

8

Pale-blonde fall trend

Blondes, listen up: Hairstylist Xavier Velasquez says iconic blonde shades like that of Marilyn Monroe or Pamela Anderson will be getting all the attention this fall. Just remember that it’ll take some major toning to maintain this butter-yellow shade, fyi, so make sure to stock up on purple shampoo and wash with it once a week to eliminate brassiness and keep your color fresh.

9

Bouncy blowouts for fall

The easiest, most low-effort way to copy Kim Kardashian’s bouncy waves is with a set of hot rollers. Just give yourself a blowout with a round brush or, even simpler, a hair-dryer brush. Then, wrap and roll wide sections of hair around the hot rollers—alternate wrapping the hair under and over the roller for more volume—let sit for 20 to 30 minutes, then unravel and shake loose for big, tousled curls.

10

Milk-chocolate fall hair color

Hair colorist Rita Hazan says this milk-chocolate brown color on Chrissy Tiegen will be the brunette shade of fall 2023. Its neutral base can be worn by legit any skin tone or eye color, and, if you feel like DIYing, it’s fairly easy to achieve at home on lighter hair colors with an all-over color glaze.

11

The 2023 “Rachel” Cut

The “Rachel” cut might be celebrating its 29th birthday this year (!!), but as beauty continually proves, everything old is eventually made new again. Hairstylist Garren says we’ll continue to see iterations of the beloved '90s haircut or the “satchel cut,” which is a mix between that and a shag, as seen above on Jenna Ortega. “This works really great for thin/fine hair, because it makes you look like you have more layers in your hair without making it look too thin,” he says.

12

Messy, bedhead looks for fall 2023

I love when a trend is easy to follow, and nothing is easier than rolling out of bed in the morning. Hairstylist Aaron Grenia says bedhead will be one of the biggest looks of 2023. “With the ‘90s so on-trend right now, it seems that messier, almost grunge-era styles are a natural tangent from the tousled beach waves that have been so popular in recent years.”

Classic Shags for 2023

Hairstylist Kim Kimble said it: Shags of all kinds—curly shag, long shag, shaggy mullets—are going to be big for fall 2023. “This style has been reinvented in so many different ways and I believe it will make a comeback with more variations heading into 2023.” According to Garren, the shaggy hairstyle typically requires less styling, which means you can choose to air-dry your hair or blow-dry it and still get the same textured look as Kiernan Shipka, above.

14

Wolf cut for fall 2023

Want to try a layered look on your curls? Try a wolf cut, which was practically created for curly hair, because it adds major volume and movement. Hairstylist Kim Kimble says it's key that you pick trends that really work for your face shape and hair type and make sure to use products intended for your hair type and texture.

15

'70s vibes for fall 2023

Not into the '80s shaggy mullet? Take it back another decade and try these '70s feathered curls and curtain bangs. Hairstylist Kim Kimble says this look will be making a comeback again for fall 2023, so grab your roller sets and roller skates.

16

Middle-parted straight hair

Another style straight from the ‘70s is straight hair parted down the middle, and the classic look is coming back for another round. “We are seeing celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens and Kim Kardashian turn Cher’s straight hair to a more modern look, and it is trending in turn,” Kimble says. To get the look this fall, straighten your hair with a flat iron, then smooth on a hair oil to give it some shine, suggests Kimble.

17

Super-long hair for fall 2023

The general theme for next year according to hairstylist Xavier Velasquez? Maximalism. “More is more," he says. "More volume or more length and so on.” Sure, you can try growing your hair super long (with lots of patience, forgoing heat and bleach, and hydrating your scalp and hair). Or go the easy route with some long hair extensions—a 22- to 24-inch length should do the trick.

18

'90s updos for fall

The '90s will continue to heavily influence 2023 hair trends, starting with updos like this one. “The updos will be more on top of the head similar to that of Brigitte Bardot and Pamela Anderson,” hairstylist Alex Brown explains. To keep your updo from slipping, Brown recommends BLAX Elastics hair ties, noting that “they’re super durable and won’t break when securing your bun or ponytail.”

19

French twists for fall 2023

Hairstylist Alex Brown says we can expect to see lots of modern French twists with curled pieces out and pinned to the top of the head this fall (as seen above on Dorit Kemsley). “I recommend spraying a lightweight hairspray—Maria Nila Styling Spray is my favorite—at the roots and throughout the entire head before brushing the hair up into a ponytail or bun for a more secure hold,” Brown says.

20

High buns and ponytails for fall

Brown also suggests trying a high bun hairstyle or ponytail with face-framing pieces for a soft, did-this-in-five-seconds finish. The trick for getting your hair (especially if you’ve got thick, coarse hair) to stay exactly where you want them? Lots of bobby pins and French hair pins, says Brown.
