5 Hair Care Tips When Wearing Knotless Braids (1)

Stylish braids of all types have been around for decades. We’ve seen jumbo and box braids on Janet in Poetic Justice, cornrows on Queen Latifah in Set It Off, and micros on Brandy. We’ve seen braids wit bright colors, different patterns, fishtail braids, and even braids used to create faux loc styles. We’ve seen it all!

This year, a hot trend for braids peaked the scene that essentially removes the knots between where the hair weave locks to your strands, giving this style the name, “knotless braids”. Let me tell you – this style is super cute! These braids look more natural and spice up this classic hair trend. As always, braids offer not only a unique way of expression, but also a protective way to give your hair a break.

While knotless braids and other protective styles are options to rock your locks, hair neglect is real, and can do more harm than good. We caught up with our Master Stylist and Gourmet Blends Expert Eve to bring you five great hair care tips to ensure you are getting the best looks out of your knotless braids while keeping your hair we maintained underneath:

Clarify and moisturize on a regular basis
Even after your install, it’s important you continue to remove buildup from your scalp and keep your hair moisturized so that it's flourishing underneath. One of our favorite buildup-removing cleansers is our Caramel Cowash. It’s lightweight so it won’t weigh your style down after washing, and it’s super hydrating and breakage-reducing – the perfect cleansing combo for any type of extensions.

Don’t overdue the style
When it’s time to take that style down, IT’S TIME! A protective style install is not meant to be worn for a lifetime – just enough time to give your hair a break. While you can wear some protective styles, including knotless braids, up to 8 weeks, we recommend 4-6 weeks of wear to avoid any long-term damage to your hair underneath.

Pay attention to your hair porosity
Make sure you have a firm understanding of your hair’s porosity prior to getting your knotless braids. Fine hair tends to not do as well with large box braids because of the weave’s heaviness – if braids are too heavy, they can pull fine hair straight out the scalp. We recommend our Buritti Nectar Hair Repair Oil for strengthening hair from root to tip while protective styling. This oil’s Omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids will keep your natural hair strong and nourish your scalp. We also recommend getting a consultation from your stylist before any install.

Protect day AND night
Keep it cute at night, too by wrapping your hair up with a silk scarf or bonnet. The silkiness will help prevent breakage while sleeping. Before wrapping your hair up, spray your style down with our Coconut Water Hydrating Elixir for overnight moisturizing and nourishment. If you’re not into bonnets or scarfs, a silk pillow case will also do the trick!

Be gentle
Sometimes taking your protective styles down can be tiresome and tedious. Although it may take longer, try your best to be very careful and gentle when you take your styles down to avoid yanking your hair and breaking it off. You could also have your stylist remove it for a nominal fee. Patience is key!

We want to know how you’re styling and rocking your knotless braids. Share your ideas and additional hair care tips in the comments below!

News – by Eartha Terrell The Best Camille Rose Blends For Your...At the start of the 2010s, the natural hair industry shifted to a more holistic approach. The realization of how harsh and damaging chemicals were on the hair led many women to their kitchens, using everyday food items to add natural nourishment to the scalp. At the helm of this shift is our founder, Janell Stephens. Camille Rose boasts gourmet mixtures proven to keep your tresses in tip-top shape. In addition to nourishing strands, Camille Rose collections repair and revive every hair texture, from kinky to straight. This includes the widely problematic dry, itchy scalp. If you’re struggling with a problematic scalp, want to beat the harsh winter weather or simply bask in confident hair luxury, these four Rosette-approved treats are a must. CLEAN RINSEThis clarifying shampoo is made with honey and peppermint oil, which is excellent for soothing and exfoliating a dry scalp. Users rave about finding a clarifying shampoo that does not strip their hair, leaving it limp and brittle like many other clarifying products. The Clean Rinse is surprisingly moisturizing and smells fantastic. It is excellent for that first wash day after removing braids or twists, as protective styles can lead to build-up. Follow up with your favorite Camille Rose conditioner for a lightweight, clean scalp.BURITTI NECTAR REPAIR CHOLESTEROL TREATMENTBuritti Nectar Treatment is made of exotic Amazonian Buritti fruit oil in Omega 3, 6, and 9 blends. It is jam-packed with moisture and nutrients to keep hair soft and moisturized. This cream can be used on wet or dry hair. Rinse after use.COCONUT WATER PENETRATING HAIR TREATMENTCoconut Water Penetrating Hair Treatment is a game changer. It effectively helps train your strands to retain moisture, and the coconut water delivers anti-fungal properties. This is key when combatting a flaky, itchy scalp. Another Rosette favorite, it's praised for its ability to deeply penetrate hair with low porosity. Try this conditioner with heat to amplify its moisture-releasing properties.MINT CONDITION BRAID AND SCALP SPRAYBraids and protective styles are known to cause itching and inflammation over time. Because these styles can be kept in the hair for weeks, some even a month or two at a time, products build-up, wash days can be further apart, and some styles make it difficult to smoothly apply your regular moisture products. The Mint Condition spray aids these obstacles with a refreshing spritz. Camille Rose combines aloe vera and sea moss to rejuvenate the scalp and provide relief from an itchy scalp.Caring for your strands can feel like a full-time job, but it doesn’t have to be. Keeping these blends at arms length will ease scalp inflammation and restore your hair to its healthiest and most manageable version. Be sure to shop these and more at your favorite retailers in-store and online at Target, Sally Beauty, Ulta Beauty, Rite Aide and more! Read more

News – by Eartha Terrell Honoring Black History Month And Payi...Hey Rosettes, Camille Rose is returning to our roots as we celebrate the richness of Black culture this Black History Month and onward. Of course, we had to discuss one of our favorite subjects, Black Hair! As you know, Black hair is beautiful, unique, and versatile. From curly coils to twist-outs and more, textured strands are a way for Black people to reconnect with their heritage. Thankfully, the modern natural hair movement placed textured tresses at the forefront, honoring the legacy of Black hair within the beauty industry and beyond. Hair Story Hair has always been the cornerstone of tradition in Black communities dating back to ancient Africa. Hair played a significant role in past societies, with certain styles as distinguishing markers identifying marital and social status, fertility, and more. Many modern styles are vestiges of ancient techniques, including the beloved Bantu Knots, which are said to have originated from the ancient Zulu tribes in western and southern Africa. Ancient hair care regimes As part of such an illustrious history, maintaining superior hair care is a phenomenon that has been around for a while. One of the earliest pieces of evidence of hair care can be seen in Egypt. Both men and women held cleansed hair in high regard. Regarding hair manageability, Egyptian women often used natural remedies such as Castor oil and creams. Black hair as an art form If a picture is worth a thousand words, then early images of Black hair in art depict a reference for elaborate style, societal nobility, and spirituality. In the traveling exhibition, "Hair in African Art and Culture," organized by the Museum for African Art, New York, hundreds of images shed light on the windows of the past with every unique sculpture and articulate design. From carefully crafted masks with pronounced heads indicating a spiritual reference to warriors with long hair covered in amulets, many figures demonstrate how Black hair was revered and celebrated in ancient cultures. Modern tributes to Black hair The natural hair movement continues to transform the beauty industry and reinvigorate much-needed conversations regarding inclusiveness in beauty. In 2019, The CROWN (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural hair) Act was spearheaded by the CROWN Coalition to end hair discrimination. It has now been adopted by 20 states and continues to grow support internationally. As the world continues to learn and acknowledge the history of Black hair, it lays the groundwork for a greater understanding of Black communities. Recently, Hair Tales on Hulu with executive producers Oprah Winfrey, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Michaela Angela Davis highlighted this further as they open up space for dialog, capturing Black women's experience through the lens of hair. Our founder Janell Stephens has expressed her appreciation for natural hair in all its glory from the beginning. And as a Black-owned beauty business, Camille Rose aims to continue to serve as an inspiration for the Black community and the beauty industry. Read more

News – by Eartha Terrell Camille Rose Leave-In Conditioners Ro...If your hair needs hydration, here is some advice - don't sleep on leave-in conditioners! Leave-in conditioners (applied directly after washing and conditioning) give hair extra moisture to protect stands and keep curls popping. The conditioning step seals the cuticles of the hair strand, locking in moisture that strengthens hair from the inside out - and even preventing future issues like breakage and falling. For curly strands, natural oils from the scalp take longer to reach strands throughout the hair, creating the perfect storm for dried and damaged tresses. If you're wondering how Rosettes continuously show up and show out with major drip and slip, we're here to share their secret,--leave-in conditioners. We've rounded up Camille Rose's gourmet whipped leave-ins that Rosettes swear by for manageably softer hair. Coconut Water Leave-In Treatment Coconut oil is an ancient treatment used to cleanse and treat the scalp. Enriched with vitamins K and E, it's one of the greatest allies for Rosettes who want to keep their strands strong from root to tip. A wonder conditioner for all hair types, Camille Rose Coconut Water Leave-In is especially great for wavy curls looking to beat the frizz. This sweet aromatic mixture is an emollient-rich, penetrating blend of flax, grape, hemp, and sunflower churned into a green tea brew to nourish and penetrate every hair follicle. Leave-In Trio Collection What's better than one conditioner; three! For hair with a luster that is soft to the touch, look no further than Camille Rose Perfect and Protect "Leave-In" Collection Trio Set for everything you need for leave-in perfection! This trio of specially-crafted leave-ins is designed to hydrate, define, seal and soften tresses after cleansing. While we love using the Perfect and Protect Set as a trio, this versatile set can be used separately for targeted hair needs. You'll want to know Latte if it's the definition you crave. This nutrient-rich, black cumin-based styling cream is crafted to hold and define styles and textures. Use it to create finger waves, twist-outs, curls, and coils, or even with curlers if that's your thing!Lavender Whipped Cream Leave-In Conditioner “Extra-Slip”If you turn your wash days into self-care staycations, then Lavender Whipped Leave-In Conditioner is for you. An herbal, floral sensation, the Lavender Whipped Leave-In works to soothe the senses while replenishing your hair with fruit extract and real Lavender oil to soften and stimulate healthy hair regrowth. Lavender Whipped is an MVP for 4C-type hair. You'll be amazed as you watch your brittle and parched strands transform. It's excellent for moisturizing hair, treating ends, and protecting it from environmental free radicals, and a must if you've experienced damage from overheating or color treatments. Curl Love Moisture Milk with a twist It's time to get that slip! After washing your hair, detangling can be a timely process. We have the perfect solution to cut the time in half without damaging your precious hair. Curl Love is a Rosette staple and a go-to for protection before styling. Infused with moistening vitamin-rich rice milk and drips of macadamia oil to prevent breakage, with hints of vanilla, it penetrates and reinvigorates strands with massive moisture. For an added boost, like fellow Rosettes, combine with Camille Rose's Coconut Water Style Setter for hydrated curls that are on point every time. Leave-in conditioners work wonders for textured hair. They bring out the best version of your strands and are great for those on the go who need a quick boost. Our founder Janell Stephens creates every formula with your hair needs in mind, whipping together healthy and restorative mixtures for intense hydration for your scalp and hair. From Curl Love's sweet, nourishing macadamia nut and vanilla aroma that lingers long after applied to a complete conditioning trio, it's no wonder Rosettes rave about their results. As a businesswoman, she’s established herself as a contender in her industry working on projects involving Bishop T.D. Jakes, Kamala Harris, and many more. The multi-hyphenated beauty savant added author to her title with the release of her first book, 'In Pursuit of A Dream.'Camille’s Corner caught up with Bradford, who candidly discussed her favorite Camille Rose Blends, her journey in the beauty industry, and tips for Rosettes ready to embark on their entrepreneurial paths. Camille’s Corner: How did you get started?Bradford: I am a hair and makeup artist. I have been doing this for over eight to nine years, but I have been doing lace wigs for 17 years. I started wearing them 17 years ago, and that’s how I started. I have a lot of experience in the lace-wig industry. I work for several new stations, from MSNBC to NBC to PBS and GTN, CGTN.”Camille’s Corner: What tips can you give women to maintain healthy hair while wearing their lace-front wigs?Bradford:Everyone has their way of doing things and their journeys. Regarding myself and what works for my clients, you must keep your hair hydrated and only manipulate your hair occasionally. When it comes to protecting your edges, I see many people putting stocking caps and hair sprays; for my clients and me, that’s a no because a lack cap that’s nylon can cause friction and rub up against your edges. My tip is to do away with the nylon caps.Camille’s Corner: What are your favorite Camille Rose products and why?Bradford: One of my anchor's hairstylist introduced me to the brand, and I fell in love. Products like the Coconut Water Hydrating Elixirand just a little water freshen up the curls, and you don’t have to wait for them to dry. It gives you that curly, bouncy feel without sitting underneath a hair dryer or using a diffuser. I also like Curl Maker, and I use that when I take more time to wash and deep condition a wig. Camille’s Corner: Tell us about your journey and what you learned.Bradford: I realized I had to take accountability for myself and stop blaming others for things I could control. I had to sit down and prepare myself for what I was asking God to deliver. Once I prepared myself, all the doors opened and never closed in my face again.Camille’s Corner: Tell us about your day-to-day life as a professional MUA and hairstylist.Bradford: My everyday routine doesn’t look the same. My normal job is at NBC. I deal with one primetime anchor, and my daily routine looks like checking in with her assistant, learning the schedule, and ensuring her hair is taken care of when she is wearing wigs. The other stations are solely makeup.Camille’s Corner: What advice would you give other Rosettes who aspire to similar careers?Bradford: I would encourage others to research and prepare themselves for what they’re asking. While you shouldn’t be afraid to reach out to people that are doing what you want to do, reach out to people that are aligned with what you want. If you want to do bridal hair and makeup, don’t reach out to someone who is doing television because they are two different industries. You have to know precisely what you are going after and what you desire. Not saying that you can’t navigate different spaces, but you have to be the master of one space at a time. Camille’s Corner: What legacy do you want to leave behind?Bradford: I want to leave a legacy that I never gave up on anything that I said I wanted to do. I want clothes to understand that they also can do the same thing but they have to get out of their own way. Read more
News – by Eartha Terrell How Businesswoman Regan Farley Reache...Entrepreneur Regan Farley remains on the move. The publicist and one-half of PR firm Intel Media Group is a firm believer in the phrase, "the early bird gets the worm." But, despite her packed schedule, the Baltimore native says, her beauty and self-care routines are top priorities. She maintains her hair's natural luster and health by religiously keeping her salon visits, avoiding damaging products and treatments, and keeping a few Camille Rose blends on deck. "I am natural in the sense of no perm. Now with my beauty routine, I am a salon girl, but when I have my braids, I use Camille Rose sprays that I love, and I've also used Camille Rose's edge control. For me, maintaining my hair looks like making sure it's washed and conditioned and using products to help with that," she said. Farley is like many Rosettes living fast-paced lives that avoid dry scalps and breakage with sprays like the Honey Dew Liquid Moisture Refresher during protective styles. Farley says it's essential that she takes care of her hair between salon visits. Similarly, just as Farley is intentional about her hair, she is just as disciplined in her career. Early on, she worked with some of the largest companies and brands in entertainment, such as Universal Media Group, Fox Broadcasting Company, and many more. In a decade, she's created a strong network that she now leverages for other businesses."No matter where I've worked, I've always deemed it necessary to do my own thing and move the needle for what public relations looks like as a Black entrepreneur," she said," I'm a solid strategist. For me, it's seeing the big picture and ensuring the dots are connected. I ensure that the messaging is pushed out on our clients' platforms and that the general public knows our client's brand missions and visions."While her success appears easy, she admits she's overcome several obstacles on her career path. "The little nuances of building a business are what can be difficult the further you climb and become a thought leader in your space. Building a team and finding the right people has challenged me."While the HBCU grad touts a stellar resume, she shares that her journey is just starting."In the next five years, I want to run a multi-million dollar public relations firm, moreso not executing. I'm just overseeing brand strategy and big-picture items."Luckily for the hundreds of clients she and her partner support, those obstacles only reinforce her resolve. "We don't let those things get the better of us because I think what's important is knowing your worth, showing what that looks like, pulling someone else up to ensure that they are successful behind you, and that's how you're blessed, and that's how you overcome anything that life throws at you."Farley recommends remaining curious and staying abreast of industry trends for younger Rosettes interested in a career in public relations. "Stop at nothing to make your dreams come true, but more importantly, always remain a student. If you're not learning, you're not growing. If you think you know it all, you've already failed." Farley tells Camille's Corner that public relations isn't about self-praise but how others perceive you. From this perspective, it's clear why she excels. Her innate desire to help others push through and reach their goals indicates her longevity in the business. "I can do a ton of things in the world. I could reach all the different goals that I want, but having the ability to pour back into someone else is important to me." Read more
News – by Eartha Terrell Celebrating Emotional Wellness Month ...Hey Rosettes, it's National Emotional Wellness month, and now is the perfect time to do a temperature check on your mental and emotional health. We all live busy lives full of to-do lists at work and home, but it's vital that what we do doesn't undermine how we feel. Self-care is crucial to your complete well-being; believe it or not, beauty is linked to your emotional health. Research conducted by dermatologist and clinical psychologist Richard G. Fried, MD, Ph.D., FAAD, of Yardley, PA, highlights the connection between feelings and appearance. His work notes that failure to acknowledge negative emotions and feelings can affect how one looks, feels, and behaves. -During heightened stress and anxiety, physical symptoms can manifest as hair loss, acne, and nail breakage. This can perpetuate more negative feelings. So, if you're in a funk, give yourself permission to take time for yourself, relax and rejuvenate. Here are our top picks to help ease your cares away.Soaking in a warm bath Have you ever taken a quiet, warm bath and felt terrific afterward? Well, there's a science to this. Research asserts that bathing helps increase blood flow and reduces the stress hormone cortisol. Not to mention, immersing yourself in water increases serotonin--releasing feelings of happiness while boosting your mood. For an added dose of zen, add three to five droplets of Camille Rose's Organic Honey Bath Elixir infused with rose water, honey, mallow flower, and more for a complete aromatic experience. Aromatic Bliss Your sense of smell is linked to passageways in the brain connected to memory and emotion. Fragrances alleviate stress and have a full-body effect – relaxing the mind and muscles. Investing in the right aroma makes a difference. Rejuvenating skincareResearch shows when stress overwhelms the body, corticotropin, glucocorticoids, and epinephrine go into overdrive. These hormones activate adrenaline in the body and, unfortunately, can show up on the skin. Since our skin is the largest organ in the body, it makes sense why it would be one of the first indicators of an internal balance. Nothing is worse than acne and even atopic dermatitis flare-ups when you're not feeling your best. Combat your stress and pesky bumps with healthy ingredients. Camille Rose facial cleansing bars are infused with Tamanu, Coconut oil, and seaweed powder. All of these work together to penetrate the skin's barriers deeply, increase collagen production, speed up wound healing, and more. Tantalizing hair and scalp massages According to the American Massage Therapy Department, scalp massages decrease stress and blood pressure and impact mood. The next time you're feeling overwhelmed, try massaging your hair with Camille Rose oils for relaxation and hair growth. Try one of the team's newest members, the Black Castor Oil and Chebe Repair Oil, packed with coconut oil and chebe powder to keep your edges intact and your mind at ease. Carving time out for yourself isn't selfish; it's self-full. While this month observes emotional wellness, we know this is a lifestyle here at Camille's Corner. Every day you deserve to indulge each of your senses. Read more
News – by Eartha Terrell No More Predictable Halloween Costume...Halloween is a particular time originating from the ancient Samhain Celtic festival. Similarly to modern celebrations, Samhain honored the holiday with bonfires and wore costumes to fend off ghosts. Today, many of those same traditions remain, and here at Camille’s Corners, our practice is to showcase Rosettes’ boo-tiful looks. Over the years, we’ve watched Rosettes transform into reindeer, Beyonce as Foxy Cleopatra, and even Disney’s Princess Tiana. We expect no less this year, so we’re giving you a head start to create ideas inspired by some of the most memorable characters from the 1990s. So without further ado, check out these outside-of-the-box looks to inspire your costume. The Powerpuff GirlsIn 1998, the Powerpuff Girls emerged on the scene with superhuman powers and bubbly personalities. Today, Buttercup, Blossom, and Bubbles are still imprinted in our hearts, and their signature looks are iconic. This Halloween, tap into your superhuman creativity like @b_dockk and make this idea your own. You can use items in your closet, like a wig or hair extensions, with a bit of glamorous makeup for a complete look. MTV’s DariaWho remembers the classic MTV television series, ‘Daria?’ Ranked among the top 50 adult animated series of all time by TV Guide, its lead character Daria became a standout as the uber alternative high schooler. Opting for Daria would be a hit if you’re looking for a more subtle vibe this season. Cosplay extraordinaire @andreariquena recreated the character with a twist. Rocking black, straight, and long hair with Daria’s signature black glasses, we loved how Andrea brought back that 1990’s nostalgia. Debbie and Eliza ThornberryBefore Instagram travel influencers dominated the scenes, Nickelodeon’s animated series ‘The Wild Thornberrys’ brought adventure and jet setting to the mainstage. The series captured the experiences of a family globetrotting from coast to coast and caught viewed attention with two of its lead characters, Debbie and Eliza. Step up your costume game like @kieraplease, who reinvented both characters. For Eliza, show off her red pigtails with your choice of yellow dress and red necktie. Want to try Debbie on for size? Go complete 1990s grunge with flannel and blonde hair, and be sure to bring some attitude. Sister, SisterTia and Tamera Mowry stole American hearts as the identical twins lost at birth but reunited as teens on the hit show, ‘Sister, Sister.’ From their teenage mischief to sharing their sisterly bond, this sitcom made younger viewers feel connected, seen, and heard. News – by Eartha Terrell Meet Quinita McCullars: The Creator W...Atlanta-based creative and brand strategist Quinita McCullars is about serving BIG energy. With her gift of gab, she helps brands authentically connect with their audiences online. Her infectious personality is why her followers tune into her digital world. They can expect entertainment, laughter, fun, and of course, gain insight into her creative process and fast-paced lifestyle. From sharing her favorite home tech goodies to getting honest about professional challenges as a young entrepreneur, McCullars is definitely THAT GIRL!“I do my best to be real and transparent on my platforms. I am a beautiful, confident, chocolate-skinned, and plus-sized woman that is just scratching the surface of my potential.” Embarking on a creative journey through natural hairToday, McCullars makes content creation look easy, but her talent took several years to cultivate. “My journey started about five years ago, and it came about because I was trying to find a creative outlet for myself. I have always been an outgoing person and super creative, so I wanted to build that into something. But understand, social media back then, meaning my college days from 2009 to 2014, was vastly different than what it has evolved into. And quite frankly, I didn’t know the first thing about how to get started, let alone video editing,” she said. Inspired by the booming natural hair movement on YouTube, she began taking content creation and haircare more seriously. After learning newfound techniques, she perfected her haircare regime and began practicing with her friends and family. This would be the push she needed to start transitioning her hobby into a brand focused on hair and beauty.“I was doing my hair one day in my living room, and the idea popped into my head. Before I could think it through, my mom walked in and blurted out, “Do that YouTube thing; you’ve been putting it off too long. You have a light in you and can help someone else by sharing it.” I launched my YouTube channel, Quinita Charnell. And, of course, my brand is all about hair, beauty, and other creative DIYs.”All about the BIG, red hair Curly, full of life and bounce, McCullar’s hair is synonymous with her bold and vivacious demeanor. It not only represents her outlook on life but now has become a signature look her followers have come to expect.“It’s funny because people don’t know my signature hair is a crochet wig. I style them to look as if it’s growing straight from my scalp.”As a self-proclaimed ‘low-maintenance’ natural, McCullars is about keeping her hair routine simple and consistent. Between her monthly visits with her beautician, she keeps her hair hydrated and moisturized with Camille Rose’s Almond Jai Twisting Butter and Moisturizing Mint Condition and Scalp Spray. “I love the Camille Rose’s Twisting Butter and Moisturizing Spray. The butter helps define my natural curls and has them looking juicy with my natural twist-outs, all while still giving me the definition I wanted. And the spray keeps my scalp from drying out and itching. These two are so good, and I highly recommend them!”Empowering others to embrace their imperfections During a time when personas online often dominate social media, McCullars resonates with her audiences because she isn’t afraid to share her successes and challenges with her community. Her life is an open book. She hopes to inspire others to pursue their passions with confidence and courage. “I’m not afraid to admit that I don’t always have it together all the time, either. There are days when I don’t feel like it, lack confidence, doubt myself, and overthink, but I still show up for myself and the community I’m building.”Juggling work, family, and a full social calendar can be exhausting. Still, the serial entrepreneur prioritizes her emotional and mental health above all. She follows a strict routine to maintain balance, motivating her to stay productive.“I take a half hour to meditate, read some, and/or say positive affirmations to myself, and then hop in the shower to get dressed. I try not to look at my phone until after my routine is completed so I don’t get distracted or see anything that may alter my mood.”The sky is limitless when you believe in your dreams. Whether you’re a social media creator or have something else in mind, now is the time to bring your ideas to life. “My journey is still being written, and only I can create the reality I want in life, and so can each of you reading this. The only thing that can stop you is you, sis!”Want to learn more about Quinita? Follow her @quinitacharnell on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.Image credit:Nazsare English Read more

News – by Eartha Terrell Camille Rose-Approved Detangling Reci...Rosettes, your curly strands are beautiful and unique—every strand twirls and spirals in such a miraculous design that it defies gravity. With all its magical capabilities, natural strands are also more prone to damage if not cared for properly. Whether you’re a natural hair pro or a newbie to the game, there is a Camille Rose blend for every stage of your journey with your hair’s needs in mind. When it comes to high porous textured hair, sourcing Mother Nature’s most potent botanicals and herbs are essential to compliment your tresses and, of course, make styling easier. If you’re challenged with manageability, you’re not alone, and we’re here to help you retain length and minimize breakage. Getting to know your hair from the roots First and foremost, how well do you know your hair? Have you taken the time to define your hair type and porosity? If not, now is the time to investigate. Understanding your hair profile allows you to choose the best products for maximum hair health. But—what's hair porosity, and how do you figure out your own?According to research, hair porosity is defined as your strand’s ability to absorb and retain moisture, and the hair shaft's cuticle is responsible for this. How well your hair can allow oils and moisture to flow between its cuticle is critical to identifying the healthiest hair care routine for yourself. Hair porosity is measured from low, average, to high, and you can test it by dipping a few strands into water and observing the absorption. High porous hair will sink to the bottom.High-porosity hair absorbs water and oil quickly. Unlike low or medium porosity locks, high porosity does better without heat and chemical treatments. Why does high-porous hair tangle? While high porous hair absorbs water and oil –it doesn't retain moisture for long. This is because the hair's cuticles, which lay flat when healthy, have been lifted and are no longer in an ideal condition. Because the cuticles are aggressively raised, the strands tangle onto each other. In addition to easily tangling –high porous hair is also more susceptible to extreme dryness and lack of shine. If you're experiencing tangles and/or knots with your high-porous strands, here are three Camille Rose-approved recommendations to prevent unnecessary pain and damage. Here’s why deep conditioning makes managing your hair easierTo assist your hair in retaining moisture and prevent thirsty and dehydrated tresses – be prepared to deep condition hair often. There’s a reason Rosettes flock to Camille Rose’s rich and creamy Algae Renew Deep Conditioner. It’s packed with gourmet ingredients like blue-green algae enriched with vitamins and proteins to strengthen hair and tropical mango butter to seal in moisture. Together, these ingredients work to deeply penetrate and rejuvenate the scalp while protecting the cuticle from the inside out.Pre-pooing before a full hair cleanse for added hydrationHigh-porous hair requires effort and consistency. One way to ensure your hair's cuticles are healthy is by pre-pooing with oil before washing. This helps lock in moisture without releasing it back into the air. The restorative ayurvedic virgin Amala oil and Brahmi herbal infusion in Camille Rose’s Cocoa Nibs + Honey Ultimate Strength Serum is a healing treatment that should be a staple in your routine. Since amla oil is highly effective in rejuvenating blood flow to the scalp and can be easily penetrated within the hair shaft, this would be a great option to use as a sealant.Add detangling products to your hair rituals to maximize resultsYour high porous high is unique and requires more TLC. Use a refresher for a quick pick-me-up or to soothe your hair. Lavender Shaken Hair Spritzer is powerful and gets results! This lightweight mist is crafted with nourishing lavender oil and just the right amount of sweetness for an aromatic blend that smells amazing and moisturizes dry or wet hair. Read more

While sailing the seven seas, it’s even more important to take practical measures to keep your skin looking flawless. Check out these traveling hacks to ensure your beauty rituals never miss a beat no matter where you are on the planet.Hydration From the Inside Out Even when offered those complimentary wines, you will politely say “no” because elegance is a refusal or something like that. But really, and you should already know this, water hydrates the skin, and in a dry, pressurized airplane, it’s crucial to stay hydrated. If regular water is boring to you, try sparkling, adding lemons, limes, or coconut water.Toner is Your AllyIf you have clogged pores, oily skin, or are prone to acne, you need to add toner to your skincare routine no matter where you are. After applying cleanser, follow it up with our herbal FACE Fresh Tone. Adding it to your travel ritual refreshes your skin’s pH balance, and gently purifies and renews without stripping it of much-needed moisture.Moisturize, Moisturize and Moisturize!Whether you have normal, oily, or combination skin, it would be best to lock in all the moisture and hydration you can get significantly when abruptly changing climates. Use a moisturizer day and night! A good formula will minimize the appearance of pores, hydrate dehydrated skin, and creates a moisture seal on your skin. If your skin is dry after a long flight, you can slap on a thick layer of the moisturizer and use it as a 10-minute emergency mask. Pro Tip: Hydrating your hair is also essential. Be sure to grab your Camille Rose’s Moisture On The Go. The 4-piece collection is perfect for damaged hair that could use extra moisture while on vacation as it’s packed with hydrating heavy hitters to keep your natural hair clean and moisturized with defined curls. The collection includes Sweet Ginger cleanser, Moroccan Pear conditioning custard, Curl Maker clarifying jelly, and Curl Love leave-in conditioner.Don’t Leave Home Without SunscreenNever skip out on sunscreen. Like, ever! Even darker complexions are vulnerable to the sun’s harmful UV rays. If you’re skeptical about some sunscreens, which can go on heavy and can be sticky, create a DIY version for yourself. Combine Red Raspberry Oil, Carrot Oil, and Aloe Gel for an all-natural protective sunscreen that makes a cream of sorts that is cooling and weightless and absorbs fast. The oils have an SPF range of 38 – 50. Even if you’re not setting out to tan, it’s vital to protect your skin from sun damage and inflammatory free radicals.Rosettes, traveling like a beauty boss doesn’t have to be complicated. News – by Eartha Terrell Over 25, Here's Why You Need to Add C...Remember when you were younger, and your skin could quickly bounce back from your shenanigans, like leaving make-up after a night of partying? Unfortunately, skin elasticity isn't as forgiving once you're approaching 30.With age comes more self-assurance, wisdom, and of course, beauty. However, your skin is your body's largest organ and requires acute attention the older you are to account for the changes you're undergoing. Aging is nothing to fear. It's normal for our bodies to change, but a stagnant skin care routine won't do. One solution to illuminate your beauty is adding a serum to the mix for a smoother, more even-toned complexion. If you've already noticed bad habits on your face, it's not too late to reverse the damage. Serums are packed with many active ingredients whose sole goal is nourishing and restoring the skin. They work alongside your moisturizer to get the job done. The added ingredients in Youth Burst stimulate natural collagen production and protect your delicate facial skin from sun damage. Over time, the signs of aging are diminished, and skin appears youthfully radiant. If you're ready to step up your skincare, here's why Camille Rose's FACE Youth Burst serum needs to make an appearance in your routine.Increased hydration Healthy skin is hydrated, and Youth Burst Serum is your trusted ally in maintaining a dewy look. It's formulated with the moisturizing powerhouse ceramide-3. This wax-like ingredient makes up nearly fifty percent of the skin's outer layer, protecting your skin from external elements. As the body ages, however, it is likely there can be a reduction in its natural production of ceramides, and that's where Youth Bursts comes in. Adding our nighttime elixir helps fill the gap while giving your skin a healthy and moisturized glow and added protection. Combat sun damageWe all love the beautiful feeling of rays of sunshine beaming on our skin on a summer afternoon. Still, increased exposure to UV rays can cause premature signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles, and hyper-pigmentation if not correctly addressed. Camille Rose's Youth Burst is carefully enriched with Baikal Skullcap. The plant extract has long been used in China for its medicinal purposes. It goes to work to induce the skin's natural ability to repair and rejuvenate itself while fighting inflammation. What's even better is its antibacterial properties for healthy skin glow. Improves complexion and elasticity Youth Burst aids your skin in bouncing back better than ever. Its secret ingredient is mulberry leaf extract, which is packed with vitamin A and E to reduce the appearance of blemishes and age spots. According to research, mulberry leaf prevents enzymes in the body that contribute to the loss of elasticity. If you're struggling with dark spots, the mulberry leaf is a safe and natural ingredient to lighten your skin, minus the harmful side effects of traditional treatments. Read more

We’ve planned another stellar event featuring top-tier art, entertainment, food, and more in historic Old Fourth Ward Park. Get ready because this Beauté Noir is sure to be unforgettable. Emancipation CelebrationOriginally known as “Jubilee Day,” the first Juneteenth (a mashup of June and 19th, the day that all enslaved people in America were emancipated in 1865) took place in Galveston, Texas and was organized by freedmen. Although Juneteenth is considered the longest-running African-American holiday in the United States, it is the newest federally recognized holiday in the U.S. Despite being celebrated in several states for decades, Juneteenth was just declared a federally recognized holiday in 2021.While Juneteenth is a day of jubilation and fun, it is also a day of commemoration of Black culture and remembrance of the African-Americans subjected to the cruelties of slavery. As activist Tanesha Grant said, “The 4th of July was never about Black people. Juneteenth is just for us. As Black people, we are told we don’t deserve our holidays rooted in our history. Everything is whitewashed. Juneteenth is for us. Juneteenth symbolizes the hope that my children and grandchildren will be free. It’s Black Joy and Black tenacity to survive.” (via Readers Digest)Beauté Noir BackstoryIn June of 2021, we brought Beauté Noir to life. An elegant ode to Black excellence, the idea behind Beauté Noir was to pay tribute to Juneteenth in a brand new way. Through lifting Black community leaders and contributors, providing exceptional entertainment, and simply creating a space of Black beauty and joy, Beauté Noir became known as a prime example of a modern way to celebrate “Jubilee Day.” Beauté Noir: 2022Camille Rose founder Janell Stephens described it as “Afropunk meets BeautyCon,” this year’s Beauté Noir Fest promises to be even bigger and better than ever. This June 18th in Atlanta, our home base and Black mecca of the south, Beauté Noir returns for part two. Set against the backdrop of the culturally rich Old Fourth Ward neighborhood on ATL’s eastside, this year’s Beauté Noir will be another only event to remember. The park will be popping with activities like selfie stations, vendors, games, hair and fashion shows, DJs, and so much more. You know it wouldn’t be a killer event without good eats, and this year they’re going to be great. Attendees will be wined and dined by celebrity chef Shawn Osbey, with charcuterie, gourmet picnic baskets, and fresh-baked dessert, among other delicacies. Tickets also include swag, freebies, and a Camille Rose branded tote. If that weren’t enough, this year’s Beauté Noir would include entertainment from hip-hop legends Goodie Mob! A natural lubricant, hyaluronic acid's primary function is to lubricate and cushion, so it's no wonder why it works so well on the skin. It can be taken as a supplement or injection but is most commonly applied topically by skin serums.Considered a wonder by many, hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture, making skin appear smoother, firmer, and supple.PeptidesPeptides, or polypeptides, are amino acids that come together to make up proteins that help skin thrive. Collagen, which helps keep the skin looking youthful and glowing, comprises three polypeptide chains. Using products formulated with peptides can stimulate collagen production, giving skin a good and healthy effect. On top of easing inflammation and helping to clear breakouts, peptides are also great for smoothing fine lines and contributing to the skin's firmness.Hydroxy AcidsAlpha-hydroxy acids, more commonly referred to as AHAs, are among the most popular and highly recommended exfoliating treatments today. AHAs are typically derived from plants and are water-soluble, working on the skin's surface. Primarily used to exfoliate, AHAs are also great for promoting collagen and blood flow, correcting discoloration and hyperpigmentation, brightening the complexion, and preventing acne and breakouts. Although several AHAs are popular throughout the skincare industry, the two most favored are glycolic acid and lactic acid. Glycolic AcidGlycolic acid comes from sugar canes and comprises the smallest particles of all the AHAs, giving it outstanding absorption and exfoliation power. Glycolic acid works by preserving collagen and increasing the skin's cell turnover rate, leading to smoother, brighter, and healthier skin. Lactic AcidThis AHA is extracted from lactose (although it is usually synthetically produced when included in skin care products) and is considered one of the gentler AHAs in the group, making it excellent for sensitive or irritated skin. Mimicking natural molecules in the skin, lactic acid provides remarkably higher moisture to the skin barrier than many other AHAs.Ready to embark on your skincare journey? News – by Eartha Terrell ATL Hip Hop Legends Headline Beauté N...Are you ready for Beauté Noir? Our one-of-a-kind Juneteenth celebration is back for its second year and we’re pulling out all the stops to make it unforgettable. Honoring all aspects of Black culture, Beauté Noir is the place to be this June 18th. Along with food and festivities, we’ve also got a stellar line-up of live entertainment, including Atlanta’s own Goodie Mob. Behind the BeatsFounded by Big Gipp, Khujo, CeeLo Green, and T-Mo in the early 90s, Goodie Mob is one of hip hop’s most well-known groups for their original sound and legendary lyrics that often focused on social and political issues. With the release of their critically acclaimed, certified Gold debut album 'Soul Food,' Goodie Mob became one of the first southern rap groups to achieve national recognition.“Everybody was really focused, ambitious, and optimistic about going forward with some really great music as a backdrop. First of all, being very positive and also becoming the product of the environment. There was a lot of support, there was a lot of style, various styles. There was a lot of exchange and engagement with each other. There was a lot of equality and there was a lot of individuality all under one roof,” CeeLo Green reminisced of the early days of Goodie Mob (via Thrasher Magazine).Greatest HitsAny Goodie Mob fan will tell you, 'Soul Food' isn’t just the album that put the group on the map, it’s a classic album with more than a few bangers, like 'Cell Therapy', which became a Top 40 hit, topping the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart at number one. 'Dirty South,' also from 'Soul Food,' isn’t just an awesome track, it’s also the origin of the musical term of the same name. Other fan faves include their track 'Black Ice,' which features Outkast, from their 'Still Standing' album, and 'They Don’t Dance No Mo’' with Lil’ Will, also from 'Still Standing.'Back in BusinessDespite their early success and killer talent, the group disbanded in 2004 after the release of their fourth album. Officially reuniting after a Gnarls Barkley (another of CeeLo’s musical projects) show in 2006, Goodie Mob’s most recent release is 'Survival Kit,' recorded in 2020 during the pandemic. A group like Goodie Mob isn’t run of the mill, and it's their drive and vibe that’s helped them persevere and become known as one of the best hip hop groups of all time. “Basically, at the end of the day, there’s never a better time than the here and now to do something that you wanted to do. Something that you’re able to do, and in that process, remind your audience and the industry, and the world at large that you are here for reason and purpose. Our purpose is not solely to entertain but to also convey that message, and make that connection with the people,” CeeLo Green says of the group (via Paste Magazine).Don’t miss Goodie Mob at this year’s Beauté Noir! tickets are available now - grab them while you still can! News – by Eartha Terrell Put Your Best Face Forward This Summe...Summer is just around the corner, Rosettes! While we’re excited for a little fun in the sun, it’s also a prime time when skin concerns seem to pop up left and right. We want you to love the skin you’re in all summer long, so we’re doling out the facts on summer skincare, as well as some top Black skin experts to follow for all things dermatology. The ABCs of AcneIn general, acne happens when the pores and hair follicles on the skin become blocked with oil and/or dead skin cells. Contrary to popular belief, acne doesn’t just refer to bumps and inflammation, it can also come in the form of whiteheads and blackheads. No matter where you call home, summer means hotter temperatures and usually a bit more humidity in the air. Hotter temps create perfect conditions for acne as sweating leads to things like increased oil production and the escalation of clogged pores. Sunscreen for the WinWhile it’s true that those who produce more melanin in their skin have more natural protection from the sun’s UV rays, sunscreen is still a must for healthy skin no matter what your shade may be. Although those of us with darker skin typically don’t burn in the sun as quickly, skin damage happens over time, regardless of if you burn or not. Skin experts recommend that everyone wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, to prevent the risks of sun damage and cancer. Worried about white cast? These days there are tons of sunscreens created especially for melanated skin that won’t leave behind unwanted residue. We love Black Girl Sunscreen, which doubles as a moisturizing lotion and dries clear, and Buttah by Dorian Renaud Tinted Mineral Sunscreen to name a couple. News – by Eartha Terrell Hair Butters And Oils: Are They Reall...What's good, Rosettes? There’s a hot debate on the streets as of late — should we forego oils and butters on our natural hair, or do they help it to be its very best? Our take is that when used properly, oils and butters can work hair wonders. Let's take an in-depth look at the ins and outs of oils and butters and why we think they should absolutely be a part of your hair care regiment. All About Oils It’s no secret that natural hair thrives by its own set of rules. No matter your hair type or texture though, one thing remains true: it’s all about moisture and maintenance. Oils protect the hair from dryness, which leads to breakage. It also fills the gaps between cuticle cells to preserve hair follicles and strengthen the shaft of individual strands, especially in hair that is prone to dryness and frizziness. Also aiding in scalp health, oils can even help with growth retention. “When you gently massage the scalp it helps in exfoliation and sometimes that helps in reducing hair fall,” says Dr. Khushboo Garodia, a certified trichologist (via Healthline). Since natural hair can often get dehydrated, it’s important to replenish lost moisture as much as possible - something oils do without a doubt. The Benefits of Butters Like oils, hair butters help revitalize dry or brittle hair. Although hair butters often contain oils of some type, they are heavier (hence the name) and creamier, acting as a sealant for the hair that defines coils and curls. Because of the thickness of hair butters, it’s important not to overdo it. This can lead to an excess of product buildup and weigh down your hair. When it comes to utilizing hair butters, a little goes a long way. How To’sWhen using oils and butters, there are a few tips and tricks that will likely heighten your experience. One of the most popular uses of hair oil is using it to massage the scalp, which is said to promote hair growth and overall scalp health. Want to kick the benefits up a notch? Take a moment or two to warm up your oil mixture in the microwave (for no longer than 10 seconds - you don’t want it to be hot) before using it to massage your scalp. The warmed oil not only feels more relaxing but penetrates the scalp better. As far as hair butters go, you’ll see the best results if you apply it after using a leave-in conditioner. When applying, don’t skip your scalp, especially if you have particularly dry hair. Unsurprisingly, oils and butters work their best when used together - the oil acts as a deep moisturizer and the butter as a sealant that protects against damaging elements, including outside irritants like pollution and the daily strain of styling. We just can’t help it, we’re all about our oils and butters. News – by Eartha Terrell Camille Rose's Beginners Guide to Car...What’s up, Rosettes? This week, it’s all about texture, texture, texture. Having a mane with more than one texture is more common than you might think. With an estimated 65% of the U.S. population having naturally curly, coily, or kinky hair, it figures that most people are working with more than one hair type. Come with us on a deep dive into the ins and outs of multi-textured hair and how to give it the attention it craves. Let’s talk textureThe first step to treating your multi-textured hair right is discovering what your hair types are. Hair type has as much to do with texture as it does with porosity with Type 1a being the straightest and Type 4c, the kinkiest. Want to find out what your hair types are? Take a look at your hair after it’s freshly washed. The hair that dries completely straight is Type 1. If it dries wavy, it’s likely a Type 2. If your hair dries curly, that’s Type 3 hair, and if you’ve got kinks and coils, that’s definitely a Type 4. Generally, hair that falls under the A sub-type has the thinnest strand size, while sub-type C has the thickest strands - sub-type B falls somewhere in the middle. The ABC’s of strand TLCOnce you’ve figured out what types of hair you have where, it’s time to focus on care. Start out with a gentle cleanser that works well for all types of hair, like Camille Rose Sweet Ginger Cleansing Rinse. This cleanser utilizes fresh sweet ginger root and energizing lemon peel to rid hair of dirt and debris without stripping away moisture or natural oils. Next, focus on your specific hair types. Wavy and curly (usually 2a to 3b) types will love our Coconut Water Penetrating Hair Treatment. Tropical coconut and aloe juices are combined with pressed cocoa beads, palm kernel, marshmallow root and argan fruit to nourish, detangle and soften. Coily and kinky types (typically 3c to 4c) should check out Camille Rose fan favorite Lavender Quench Deep Conditioner. This stimulating hair and scalp deep conditioner features Argan mint oil and aloe juice extract to restore moisture to scalp and strands while promoting healthy hair growth. For best results, separate your hair by type and apply the suitable product to the suitable areas, then wear a plastic cap for 20 minutes to allow the product to deeply penetrate the hair follicles before rinsing. Hair styling tips and tricksWhen it comes to multi-textured hair, variety is your best friend. You may want to try a combination of styles, like putting your hair half up in Bantu buns and half down in a wash-n-go, or trying a combination of braids and twists. Want to keep it simple? A braid-out or twist-out works great on all hair types. Try our Almond Jai Twisting Butter crafted with almond milk and sweet honey to set whatever style you choose while adding extra moisture to your tresses.Do you have multi-textured hair? News – by Eartha Terrell Camille Rose Presents Beauté Noir For...Get ready, Rosettes — Beauté Noir Fest, our event honoring the beauty of Black culture is coming back for its second year and it’s bigger than ever! Join us at Old Fourth Ward Park on Saturday, June 18th for this event featuring art, entertainment, food and more, honoring Juneteenth, its history, and the many splendored aspects of Black culture. Justice and JuneteenthThe newest federally recognized holiday in the United States, Juneteenth, is all about commemorating the freedom of African-Americans and paying tribute to Black culture across the world, but specifically in America. Short for “June Nineteenth,” Juneteenth originated in Galveston, Texas, marking the fateful day in 1865 that all slaves were effectively emancipated by federal troops. Originally called “Jubilee Day,” the first Juneteenth was organized by Texas freedmen a year later. The day became known as a day of fun and festivities but also one of remembrance and honor for Black tradition and culture. Considered the longest running African-American holiday in the United States, Juneteenth became an official federally recognized holiday in 2021, although it has been recognized as such by many states for years prior. Birth of Beauté Noir FestAs a proud Black-owned brand, it was our pleasure to present the first Beauté Noir to the world in June 2021. An elegant gala of epic proportions, the first Beauté Noir paid tribute to Juneteenth with unforgettable entertainment, inspiring speakers, delectable dishes and flowing champagne amongst some of Atlanta’s biggest trendsetters and trailblazers. The reception was decked out in Camille Rose’s signature blush pink complete with a rose theme and pops of golden glitz. Hosted by lifestyle specialist, Kenny Burns, the event included a lively co*cktail hour featuring Black-owned La Fête du Rosé bubbly, DJ Stormy spinning, and an awards ceremony honoring public figures who play pivotal roles in Atlanta’s Black community. Among the honorees recognized with Camille Rose Beauté Noir Changemaker Awards were Jai Ferrell, Melissa Proctor, Dr. Lakeysha Hollman and Rasheeda Frost. Camille Rose master mixtress and CEO Janell Stephens also announced her donation to the “I Fund Women” charity, the “go-to marketplace for women-owned businesses.” The 2022Beauté Noir Fest Is Going to be EpicWe’re beyond stoked to announce that we’re back at it with Beauté Noir in 2022! News – by Eartha Terrell Black Hair Across The DecadesThrough the years, Black women have made beauty history with awe-inspiring hairstyles that are unrivaled in their creativity and technique. From fly flappers to boho beauties, when it comes to hair history, the looks just kept on giving. This week, we’re paying homage to a few of our favorite hairstyles that look fabulous while standing the test of time. Making wavesMade popular by icons like silver screen star Josephine Baker, finger waves are one of the looks most associated with the Roaring ‘20s and flapper culture. With a changing political climate and women as a whole wanting to see their place in society evolve, fashion began to favor styles that were outside of the norm. This included shorter hairstyles that “delighted the fashionable but frightened the more conservative,” according to Pamela Church Gibson, author, and fashion historian. (via Fashion Magazine)Finger waves made a big comeback in the ‘90s with stars like Missy Elliot, Foxy Brown, and TLC emulating the style and making it their own. Knotty and niceBantu knots (also known as Chiny bumps or Zulu bumps in some parts of the world) started out as a protective style, created by the Bantu people, whose roots are spread out across Africa these days. These gorgeous twists can be done on all types of hair from natural to relaxed, braided to loc-ed, or even on wet hair in what is known as a “knot-out” to create sleek and defined curls. Plait-inum styleOriginating in Africa, box braids can be traced back to ancient times — 3500 B.C. to be exact. Traditionally, these braids were worn to represent status, power, to differentiate between tribes and even to communicate messages. Braiding wasn’t only done for style, it was done for the culture. “Braiding was and is a social art. Because of the amount of time it can take, people often would take the time to socialize. It began with the elders braiding their children, then the children would watch and learn from them…This tradition of bonding was carried on for generations and quickly made its way across the world,” says Alysa Pace of Bomane Salon. (via Byrdie)In modern times, box braids regained popularity in the 1970s and 80s and had a major resurgence again in the 1990s when they were popularized by artists like Janet Jackson and Brandy. Big, Beautiful, BoldWhat would a discussion about standout Black hair be without mentioning the iconic afro? Gaining major popularity in the 1960s and 70s with the Black is Beautiful movement, afros became a way to express individuality and pride in race and culture. News – by Eartha Terrell 5 Black Creatives Leading The Culture...Representation is important, and that’s no different when it comes to television. As we sit down to enjoy our favorite shows, it’s pivotal to pay tribute to the people behind the scenes that set the stage for our entertainment. Here are five prolific Black creatives who represent the culture while making their mark on television. Shiona Turini Consultant, stylist, and costume designer Shiona Turini has worked her visual magic everywhere from fashion to entertainment. As a costume designer for “Insecure”, Turini has constantly turned out looks that boast style and ingenuity. Blige, Halle Berry, and more. Kimble’s passion for hair has been lifelong. As a teenager, Kim worked in her mother’s salon, before opening her own salon in 1995. While you may remember her from her starring role on the reality television show “L.A. Hair”, she currently leads the hair department responsible for the head-turning looks on HBO’s knockout hit “Euphoria”. Shonda Rhimes Gaining notoriety as the showrunner for “Grey’s Anatomy”, Shonda Rhimes is one of the most prominent creatives in the industry to date. Cole As the costume designer for three Kenya Barris shows (“Black-ish”, “Grown-ish” and “#BlackAF”), Michelle R. Cole is fueled by her father’s advice for her as she went to work in the entertainment industry: "He would say, 'You're Black, don't forget that. But you can do it and there are going to be forces that are going to try and stop you. But don't let them stop you.” (via Fashionista.com) That strength in spirit shines through in the colorful, often Afrocentric costumes Cole has put together in her three-decade-long career and is no doubt the energy that got her six Emmy nominations and the L.A. Confidential Impact Award. Ayanna J. Kimani Hailing from Jamaica, Ayanna J. Kimani is a distinctive designer who creates memorable looks for film, television and the red carpet.
