20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (2024)

The unpredictable environments of Fallout 76 can hide an assortment of powerful items you may want to collect for your adventures ahead. The landscape of alternative nuclear technology, mutated people and transformed animals can make your journey challenging as you leave the safety of a vault. You'll need every tool possible to survive the dangers of this game's vast open world.

Unlike other titles in the Fallout series, this game sees you and many other players exit a vault on Reclamation Day to try to colonize the surface only 25 years after nuclear war. The radiation-filled world you discover is full of items to collect, from basic materials to rare gear. Expanded map updates to Fallout 76 have only increased the amount of treasures you can find as you travel.

10 Worst Fallout Vaults You Definitely Don’t Want To Live In

Vault-Tec didn’t have the best interests of the population in mind when it designed its Vaults, and these are ones you don’t want to live in.

20 Scarecrow With Assorted Explosives

Halloween Themed Dynamite

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (2)

Holiday decorations may have helped survivors on the surface deal with the apocalyptic conditions of the world. The explosives found next to a Scarecrow may not be a particularly special item you can collect, but they are a rare and hidden set of objects that tell a visual story. A guardian that once scared birds away from crops in a field now guards crates that contain weapons more appropriate for the current state of the Wasteland.

This impressive find is in the hills to the Northeast of the National Isolate Radio Array in Fallout 76. You can only find the Pumpkin Scarecrow if you travel along the hills toward a strange altar located within the rocks alongside the structure. The explosive crates surrounding the Scarecrow contain a secret cache of Pulse Mines, Molotov co*cktails, and Frag Mines that can be a great treasure for your future self-defense.

19 Monorail Fat Man Rifle

Fire A Mini-Nuke With This Weapon

A "Fat Man" Rifle is an incredibly potent weapon that delivers a mini-nuke charge, shot in an arching trajectory from far away. Unless you like instant incineration, you do not want to use this gun from close range on your enemies. This Rifle is one of the best weapons in Fallout 76, but it can be extremely difficult to find since only a few exist within the expansive open world.

The Fat Man Rifle cannot be used until you reach Level 45 with your character, making it a weapon that can only be wielded by veterans of the Wastelands that were once West Virginia.

The Fat Man can be found next to the Garrahan Mining Headquarters towards the southwest region of your map, as you can see in the above video by YouTube creator All Things Fallout. Take the stairs up the monorail ruins, then go up to the rounded roof until you reach a monorail track. Jump down onto the track and follow it up the hill until you come across the final ring, where you can find the Rifle resting near the top.

18 Giant co*ckroach With Bowler Hat and Cane

Hello My Baby, Hello My Honey

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (3)

Some hidden items you can find are less about the actual item you collect and more about the circ*mstances in which you find them. The surreal experience of exploring abandoned homes becomes even stranger when you can find a well-dressed Rad Roach enemy in the bizarre lands you explore. This normally disgusting creature can be found wearing a bowler hat and sporting a cane at a seemingly random house.

It's a mystery why this roach ended up this way. Was this fancy creature and former enemy dressed up in a weird taxidermy project to occupy the mind of someone surviving the Wasteland, or was it a strange series of circ*mstances with a story you'll never know? Either way, you can get some Roach Meat from this creature when you find it on top of a hill north of Camden Park, but the item is hardly an important discovery.

17 The Phantom Device

Become Invisible And Turn Enemies Against Each Other

One of the coolest side quests tied to "The Order of the Mistresses of Mystery" will reward you with a hidden item called The Phantom Device. A series of missions reveals a secret society and its hideout, uncovering clues that help you ascend the ranks of a secret organization. Those who have shaped their character into a stealth-focused build in Fallout 76 will want to pursue these quests to obtain some powerful equipment.

You first learn about the Phantom Device during the "Chasing Shadows" mission, where you find an audio tape talking about the item as you can see in the above video by YouTube creator Angry Turtle.

The Phantom Device is a portable cloaking device that renders you temporarily invisible and "frenzies" enemy creatures that are nearby. The device is located in Riverside Manor, a place easily found when you start looking for the item in earnest. The quest tied to the Device has you gathering some rare items needed to build it, but once you make it you'll have the recipe to make more in the future.

16 Comrade Chubs The Teddy Bear

Find Some Romantic Skeletons Near This Collectible

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (4)

Teddy Bears in Fallout 76 are rare collectible items with very little value beyond an extremely unique decoration for your base. On top of the Torrance House, you can find one such Teddy Bear named Comrade Chubs next to a dead couple dressed in what appears to be wedding attire. The sad fate of these two should not distract you too much from the Bear, who can also be harvested to craft other supplies.

15 Blade of Bastet

Live By The Sword

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (5)

The Blade of Bastet can be acquired during the "Forging a Legend" side quest, a mission that's part of the larger "Order of the Mistresses of Mystery" series of objectives. Though this Blade has a fancy name, it is based on a Chinese Officer's sword. In the mythology of the Fallout franchise, the Chinese invaded and occupied Alaska, causing massive devastation that left many of their artifacts behind once the missiles fell.

The Blade of Bastet is one of the most powerful one-handed melee weapons you can obtain, delivering 53 hit points worth of damage per hit. Its specialty is penetrating armor, allowing you to cut through even the defenses of the toughest enemies you encounter in the open world. Similar to having the Mechanic's Best Friend weapon in Fallout 76, a melee weapon can help you conserve ammo on your best guns.

Discover Another Strange Item

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (6)

Not all the mysteries you encounter in Fallout 76 can be explained, like the Giant Metal Head you can discover deep in Tanagra Town to the far east of your map. A tree-like structure you can climb looks partially man-made here, surrounded by thick, twisty roots you can climb around the structure. Eventually, you can reach a small cave with this artifact submerged somewhat in the dirt.

There are no explanations as to what this object is, why it is found towards the top of the tree-like structure, or what purpose it may have served. Glowing mushroom items hidden in this space can be looted to give you small sources of light for your base or to illuminate darker areas you visit later. Similar to the Rad Roach in the top hat and cane, the spectacle of this secret outweighs the actual items you may receive.

13 The Garb of Mysteries

Improve Your Character's Fashion

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (8)

Another reward as part of the "Order of the Mistresses of Mystery" side quests, The Garb of Mysteries is a war-ready co*cktail dress that acts as both armor and a stealth enhancer. While this dress counts as armor your character wears, it has considerably weaker defensive stats than other equipment in the game. Thankfully, the other benefits it provides make it worth hunting down for both collectors and ambitious fighters.

Wearing the dress will make it slightly harder for enemies to detect you, by about 5%. This armor's effect will make you slightly less susceptible to damage, but some items can boost this trait to be much greater. The main reason you'll want to track down the Dress is how rare it is, as its visual appearance is far different from many other pieces of clothing scattered throughout Fallout 76.

12 The Eye of Ra

Improve Other Hidden Items

The Eye of Ra is an accessory item you can wear alongside various armor to improve artifacts your character already has. This gorgeous red brooch is meant to be worn in tandem with other weapons and gear rewarded from the "Order of the Mistresses of Mystery" side quests. According to a video by YouTube creator FudgeMuppet, each secret item has its effect boosted by the Eye of Ra.

The Eye of Ra does nothing unless you pair it with the items associated with its effect. You could use it as a simple accessory, but other items could fulfill the same role and provide passive bonuses.

For example, using the Eye of Ra with the Garb of Mysteries mentioned earlier makes you 20% harder to detect while sneaking and makes you 20% more resistant to taking damage. Other items, like the Blade of Set and Voice of Set pistol, will receive damage buffs in Fallout 76 if you wear the Eye of Ra. The Eye can be found on the corpse of Shannon Rivers in the Seneca Rocks area as you explore your map.

11 Secret Tentacle Monster

Uncover A Secret Shrine's Various Offerings

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (9)

Several cults and other religions have begun since the nuclear apocalypse, including one that seemed to worship a living tentacle monster under the earth. Straight out of an H.P. Lovecraft story, a shrine to a strange half-human, half-animal skeleton can be found at the bottom of the Lucky Hole mine to the southeast of your map. After a long descent, you can find an altar to this strange being, along with several hidden items offered to it.

10 Voice of Set

Wield A Mysterious Pistol

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (10)

The Voice of Set is a .44 pistol you can only find in the side quest "Prototypical Problems," one of the missions related to “Order of the Mistresses of Mystery.” Although other .44 pistols come standard in Fallout 76, this one is enhanced with special abilities. It does 60 damage with additional special electrical damage against robots, making it a perfect tool to take down hostile machinery you encounter.

You must be at least Level 25 to wield the Voice of Set pistol, so make sure your character is continuing their climb to Infinite Rank in Fallout 76 to eventually unlock this weapon to your arsenal.

To fully power the weapon, you'll need to gather additional data from Sugar Grove. The weapon is very effective against drone defense robots, turrets, and other automated enemies that might get in your way. Its effects also get a slight boost when used in combination with the Garb of Mysteries armor and the Eye of Ra accessory your character may equip.

9 Alien Blaster and Rusted Key

The Truth Is Out There

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (11)

The Alien Blaster has made multiple appearances in the Fallout franchise as a powerful weapon your former vault dweller can wield. Extraterrestrial life visiting Earth during its nuclear winter comes prepared with weapons ready to deal with the many threats arising from the irradiated world. With enough effort, you can also use the unorthodox pistol these supernatural life forms leave behind against your enemies.

Northeast on the map, west of Philippi Battlefield Cemetery, you'll find a submerged box in a pond that contains the Alien Blaster with a rusted key. While the weapon can be used right away, the Rusted Key is another important hidden item you'll want to pick up. This key unlocks a location with a stolen passcode, which you can use to find more secret items from the Secret Wall Safe found elsewhere in Fallout 76.

8 Secret Wall Safe with TNT Dome 2 Key

Gain Ammo For The Alien Blaster

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (12)

Using the Rusted Key you find in conjunction with the Alien Blaster, you can travel to Freddy's House of Scares in the Northern Mire for another hidden set of items. Go to the roof of this place and you'll find a shack that the key unlocks. Inside the shack is a Stolen Terminal Passcode, which corresponds with Mike Green's terminal in Fallout 76 at the top of the apartments in Morgantown.

Here, you'll find a holotape that you can take to a house in Pleasant Valley Cabins, an area similar to the Middle Mountain Cabins in Fallout 76. Use the holotape at a terminal inside the house to get another code, then go under the house and use another terminal to enter the code and get the TNT Dome #2 Key. This will get you into Bunker 2 in the Black Ordinance Mountain Works, where you'll find some Alien Blaster rounds.

7 Cultist Ritual Outfit and Ritual Mask

Put Together A Creepy Costume

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (13)

This lovely ensemble is an especially creepy outfit you can wear, which includes a human skull and real deer antlers. Starting from Wilson Brothers's Auto Repair, travel up to the red house on top of the hill, then go down into its basem*nt. Here, you'll find a shrine of bones and the Ritual Outfit in Fallout 76, but the Ritual Mask is located somewhere else in the world.

To find the mask, go to the Sons of Dane compound and go through the rusted gate in the area. Approach cautiously to avoid a few glowing Wendigos enemies hanging around, then go up to the top of the hill. Look for the shack with the sign "The Buck's Den," where you'll find what looks like the aftermath of a raging party and the Ritual Mask on the table to your right.

6 Secret Power Armor Stash

Discover A Personal Armory

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (14)

Power Armor has always been one of the best sources of defense against anything the Wasteland can throw at you in the Fallout series. A hidden stash of Power Armor can be found once you get a key from Camden Part inside a mostly intact roller coaster car. Take that key to the New River Gorge Bridge, which you can follow until you reach the lower levels that host a door with a red light.

Unlocking the door with the key you found reveals a room full of Power Armor just waiting to be used in your adventures across the Wasteland. This Power Armor looks to have been refurbished from at least a few different types, so it won't be quite as tough as the official models that remain completely intact. However, any type of Power Armor is a great find alongside Fallout 76's other armor sets.

5 Nuka Cola Power Armor Paint Job

Decorate And Advertise

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (15)

A paint job for your Power Armor can give your best equipment a distinct look, but you have to follow the path of some NPCs to find the plans for this aesthetic change. The Nuka Cola armor paint job is located inside Dome 3 of the Kanawha Nuka Cola plant, a place that you can picklock your way into. Once inside, find a locker with the key to Dome 3 and look for two notes from characters named Clara and Rich.

You first want to follow the path of Rich by heading to Watoga and finding their body with a locked toolbox next to them. The key to this toolbox is in Pylon V-13, a place where you can find another body with a duffel bag containing the key to the lockbox. Opening Rich's box reveals the key to Clara's, which can be found in a doghouse in Sutton to give you a final key for the Nuka Cola Plant and Dome 3 where the paint job is.

4 The Salvaged Assaultron Head

Use This Severed Head As A Powerful Weapon

Assaultron robots in Fallout 76 are fierce enemies you fight among the many machines that have become hostile across the open world. The Salvaged Assaultron Head is the severed head of one of these robots that has been repurposed into a pistol. The more you charge this weapon by reloading, the more damage you can dish out at the risk of irradiating your character in the process.

You can find the Salvaged Assaultron head in Watoga on the southeastern corner of the map. On the west side of Watoga, you'll find an elevated walkway guarded by aggressive Assaultron robots who you can farm the Head from among their loot once they've been defeated. Go ahead and watch the above video by YouTube creator Camelworks to see what kind of stats this weapon has among your complete arsenal.

3 Assaultron Blade

Locate Plans For Different Weapon Types

The Assaultron blade comes in two varieties: the regular Assaultron Blade and the Electrified Assaultron Blade. Of course, the Electrified Assaultron Blade is slightly more powerful and deals additional damage, making it one of the most powerful one-handed melee weapons of Fallout 76. You can farm the Assaultron blade in the same place where you can find the Salvaged Assaultron Head, on the raised walkway in Watoga.

You can also craft the Assaultron Blade yourself by finding Assaultron Blade plans, as you can see in the above video by YouTube creator LastManS7anD1nG. If you head north on the road from Dyer Chemical, you may get a random encounter with an enemy that will drop the plans for an Assaultron Blade when you defeat them. This blade isn't as fast as other melee tools, but it does deal far more damage than other weapons you collect.

2 The 50 Caliber Machine Gun

Take Down Enemies With Heavy Artillery

The 50 Caliber Machine Gun is a belt-fed heavy artillery weapon that is a potent force to be reckoned with. However, you have to use caution with this weapon since it goes through tons of ammunition very quickly. If you're not careful, you'll run out of ammo and be unable to fire this powerful gun as your enemies from Fallout 76 start closing in on your character.

Much like the other hidden weapon items you find throughout the Wasteland, you need to be at least Level 25 with your character to wield the 50 Caliber Machine Gun.

You can acquire the 50 Caliber Machine Gun relatively simply, as you can see in the above video by PoxiiPro. Start at the Clarksburg Shooting Club, just north of Base 76, and look around for a destroyed pick-up truck on the road with some items in the back. Mounted to the bed of the pickup is the 50 Caliber Machine Gun, which you can just take and fire at whichever enemies you stand in your way.

Fallout 76's Test Your Metal Update Adds New Public Events

The new Fallout 76 update entitled "Test Your Metal" adds three new challenges to the game, and its release coincides with the beginning of Season 9.

1 The Black Powder Pistol or Rifle

20 Hidden Items in Fallout 76 (& How to Find Them) (17)

The weapons in Fallout 76 are an amusing mixture of refurbished weapons, future tech from a 1950s post-war perspective, and advanced stuff that doesn't use traditional ammo, like the Salvaged Assaultron Head. Yet, in a retro-twist, one of the most powerful weapons in the game is the Black Powder Pistol or Rifle, which both use ancient low-tech bullet balls to strike enemies with a blast from the past.

Both the Black Powder Pistol and the Black Powder Rifle can be found at Phillipi Battlefield Cemetery. Just head to the museum, press the red button near the counter, and raid the weapons from the display cases upstairs. Finding the rarest hidden items in Fallout 76 will reveal more about the world, letting you understand the intricacies of the setting while giving you great equipment to overcome the Wasteland's many dangers.
